Mammoth symbolizes awesome power coupled with the ability to use that power wisely. This giant exists only in the Umbra. Mammoth watched his true children die four thousand years ago and has been dying ever since. Had Griffin not sheltered him, he'd no doubt have perished altogether by now, but even Griffin can't stop his slow death. Mammoth, even in his last years, teaches his adopted children to exercise their might wisely and conservatively. Ever when punishment is justified, for example. Mammoth frowns upon any more (or less) punishment than neccessary.
Each of Mammoth's children gains Enigmas +2. The pack gains Strength +2. Once they had the power to summon a Mammoth from the Umbra, but if there are any left, they do not respond to Garou calls now. However, as the dark eye of the Apocalypse sets its gaze on Mammoth, those Garou who follow him sense his panic and despair, gaining 2 Rage and 1 Gnosis.
Ban:
Mammoth now asks his charges for one thing only: Attempt to save his descent into destruction, by any means necessary. Children of Mammoth must never be bullies and must avoid the temptation to seek power for its own sake.
“Foremost in strength, beauty, shape and the qualities of courage and swiftness and of mighty size of body was the elephant Kandula,” is written in Mahawamsa.
The Legend of Kandula, a King's Elephant
Early in the second century BC a sacred and noble elephant arrived at the royal palace. His name was Kandula. The timely arrival coincided with the birth of Prince Gamani and was considered an important indicator of the prince's significance so the prince and the elephant were brought up together.
As a young man Prince Gamani became known as Dutugemunu (stubborn Gamani) because he opposed his father's policies. After his father's death the prince, now King Dutugemunu, declared war on his neighbours in his desire to bring glory to the Buddhist doctrine.
The elephant Kandula displayed fierce courage and great loyalty to his master in the many battles that followed. At one stage Kandula was badly injured, his back burning from molten lead. As he tried to cool himself in a nearby pond, King Dutugemunu encouraged him with these words:
"To thee I give, dear Kandula, the lordship over the whole of the island of Lanka."
Revived by the honour his master has bestowed on him, Kandula returned to battle and helped his king to victory.'
Kandula's achievements are not forgotten. His noble breed, courage, skill and loyalty, and his role in the unification of the land of Lanka under one rule played a significant role in the establishment of Buddhism. In the holy city of Kataragama a shrine has been erected in his honour and devotees in Sri Lanka proudly relate his tale, albeit in slightly varying versions.
