Hypnagogia: Warranted
Bieta visits the Prospect Police department and speaks with an Officer Catherine Walks Far Shackleford about feeling threatened and Bieta getting into a concealed carry license class. After Bieta shows Officer Walks Far the contents of an envelop which Bieta brought with her and Bieta tells Officer Walks Far how the contents came to be in her possession, Officer Walks Far tells Bieta she is justified in taking the course to get the license. Officer Walks Far instructs Bieta to include the furnished information which Bieta has shared with her when Bieta applies for the course with the Sheriff's office.

The entry foyer for the police department is always lit, always staffed, and often busy. The foyer is a high ceiling room of tile. The Prospect PD shield is inlaid in the middle of the tile, the symbol about 4 feet across. DARE posters hang in a couple spots on the walls, as do plaques recognizing the officer of the month, and, under a folded flag, a small spotlit plaque bearing a handful of names. The engraved silver plate simply reads 'That Others May Live.' Several cameras watch from various angles. Directly across from the exterior doors is the duty desk, staffed by two or three uniformed officers. They sit behind thick glass, and speak with visitors by intercom. There's a pass through at each of the windows for visitors to send paperwork back. Next to the windows is a heavy door that the desk can open with a buzzer to allow visitors back into the rest of the police building. There is also a keypad next to the door to allow officers to let themselves through without bothering the desk sergeants.

Later in the afternoon and the lobby is busy. There's a few people on benches waiting, two at the windows talking to the sergeants at the desks there. Catherine is in the foyer as well, in uniform and working apparently. She's working out some details of some paperwork with one of the desk sergeants, passing the form to him through the pass through in the security glass.

Bieta steps inside the Foyer of the Police Department with her seven year old daughter holding her hand, saying, "Good day!". As Bieta looks around, her daughter stares at everyone present. Bieta is neither smiling nor frowning when she moves behind someone in line. Bieta is holding a large envelop in her hands. Catherine looks around, finished with her work with the sergeant. She looks a little startled to see someone she knows. "Doctor," she greets Bieta. "Good to see you again! Though I'm surprised to see you here. WHat brings you to the police department?"

Now Bieta's face brightens a little with a slow to come smile. "Hello, Catherine. It is good to see you again. I came down to the department to speak face to face with someone about getting enrolled in a class for concealed carry license. I was told by Winter at Hunter's game, this was the place I needed to come in order to do that. However, whomever I was speaking to over the phone told me I needed to give a good reason...I was polite with them and gave them several...no matter what I said, they kept telling me 'no' and saying my reasons were not good enough. I wanted to speak to someone face to face here...maybe a detective...and show them something I could not share over the phone...and speak to them in private about something related to what I have here." Bieta holds up the envelop in her hand.

Catherine nods slowly as Bieta speaks. "Well...come on back to the desk and we can talk. The concealed carry...never mind. We'll talk back at the desk. Can i get you coffee or anything? Something for your daughter, a soda or juice box?"

Bieta says, "That would be very nice."

Kasia pats her mother on the leg and says, "Ma ma, may I have a soda please?"

Bieta says, "Yes, you can have a soda." Bieta follows Catherine, with Kasia in tow.

Catherine heads back to the patrol desks, detouring through the break room for coffee for Bieta and a soda for Kasia. She hands those out and then leads the way to her desk, shared desk really, and waves Bieta and Kasia to seats as well. "So...What'd you want talk about? The concealed carry applications, I'm afraid Winter didn't give you quite accurate information. Those go through the sheriff's office for the county you live in. And yes, according to california law you'll need a reason, though different sheriff's have different standards as to what's a good reason. If you have a specific threat against you, that's usually considered good reason. And you'll need to get training, there's lots of classes out there that meet standards for the class requirement."

Bieta sets her coffee down and lays the envelop in her lap. "I am trying to think of where to start." She looks over at her daughter, who seems to be enjoying her drink while looking at both Catherine and her mother. "I guess being more specific about why I purchased a new firearm with intent to carry it would be a good start." She shifts in her seat and says, "A little over a week ago, a friend of mine noticed some suspicous looking men hanging around outside a restaurant where we had been eating lunch. Later that same day when we met at a coffee shop, he saw the same men hanging around outside again. He told me, that since lunch time that same day, these men had been following me. Well, after we left the coffee shop together, things started getting strange. A woman I had only seen once at Roaster...who had never spoken to me in the past...walked up to my friend and me. She smelled of alcohol, she made some comment about my friend being 'an elusive one' and asked me if 'he was bothering me'. I am pretty sure she was drunk. "Well, my friend had to leave and when I mentioned leaving, this woman wanted me to take her home. Once my friend was gone, she handed me these papers," Bieta slides the envelop across the desk to Catherine. "Please do not open that in front of my daughter because there are some pretty graphic images included. She told me that 'they' had been looking for a babysitter for my daughter for some time, that I should look at these pages and call the numbers she put on the papers if I needed a babysitter...and she told me to call her number if I had any questions. Later when I got home, I found out the pages contained photocopies of cold case files of bodies left out in the woods and one of them was more recent. I thought it was a hoax at first because one of the cases mentioned a body which had all the bones removed."

Catherine ohs and listens carefully. She takes the file folder and, careful to not open it where Kasia can see it, glances through it briefly, then closes it. She looks at Bieta and hmmms. "Troubling, and I can see why you'd want a firearm. -I- certainly would as well. Be sure to put all that in your application at the sheriff's office...and this folder." she hands it back to Bieta. "I'd like to make copies of that if you don't mind." Catherine thinks for a minute. "I can't think of any law the woman has broken that would give you grounds for a complaint against her. Being creepy, and what you describe assuredly is, isn't grounds for a criminal complaint. Have you seen her elsewhere? Can you give a description or her name?"

"Well, her name is Linnete. That was the name she put with her number. That evening she had blonde hair. When we saw her in Roasters previously, she had pink hair."Catherine ahhs. "I'd missed that detail...you did say before that you were being followed." She frowns a little. "Can you describe them? The men? Do you know any of their names? You can get a restraining order against them," she says that like she's not fond of the advice but is constrained to give it. "But unless they're actually doing something illegal there's little the police can do. 'Serve and protect' is a great motto, but our actual job and sworn duty is to enforce the law. Unfortunately while what you're describing is creepy it's not illegal. You can get a restraining order which is, if I recall my law class correclty, a civil document but violating it then puts them in contempt of court which now is a criminal matter." She shrugs, not real happily. "It's not a great solution. Anyway, do you know who the men are, or can you describe them?" She gives a further detailed description of Linnete. "Other than public intoxication, which my friend could varify, no she has not done anything for which she could be charged." Bieta shakes her head, "I do not know if it is particularly legal for those men to be following me...I am not involved in anything which would cause someone associated with either law enforcement or the government to do that. It is really disconcerting. Whoever these men are, they know where I live because my practice is right near my house and they know where Kasia goes to school and when I go to pick her up. Catherine, this is upsetting...it is just Kasia and me...do you understand?"

Catherine ahhs. She shrugs, not real happily. "It's not a great solution. Anyway, do you know who the men are, or can you describe them?"

"They are in dark suits, wearing sunglasses. They look the way a government agent might dress in a tv program both of them are caucasian...maybe in their late thirties...dark hair...well kept conservative haircuts. One of them...the driver...looked like he had a lump under his suit jacket.." Bieta placed her hand on a spot on her own torso around the area a shoulder holster would rest. Bieta's gaze drops and she sighs. She drops her hand and curls both hands in her lap. Kasia looks over at her mother and says, "are you alright, Ma ma?"

Catherine reaches out to give Bieta's hand a squeeze. "THat's frightening," she agrees. "You could talk to my m...man. He's a lawyer and a very very good one who could help you with that restraining order. Are those men somehow associated with Linette?"

"You could say Mike and I are the sort to see connections where others might only see coincidence. Mike and a few other mutual friends who have had occassion to be near Linnete...they seem to believe there is a definite connection." Bieta says, "I would very much appreciate speaking with your...lawyer friend. Though I have no idea what the names of these men are."

Catherine mmms. "THat'll make a restraining order hard," she mutters. "But he might be able to help with the concealed handgun permit." Catherine leans back in her seat, thinking. Then she sits forward, and digs a card out of her desk. "Here... call me anytime. If you think there's danger don't hesitate to call 911. I'll talk this over with Yuri, and with teh detectives and see if any of them have any ideas."

"Hold that thought a minute," Catherine says. She gets up and takes the folder to make copies of it. It doesn't take long..the copier has a sheet feeder and it's fast. Back, she hands originals in their folder to Bieta. The others she has in another folder, closed up. "THanks for that. I'm serious...call me any time. But call 911 first if you even think you need to."

Bieta reaches across the desk and accepts the business card Catherine hands her. Bieta takes a moment to read the card before putting it away in her purse. Bieta waits for Catherine to make copies of the pages in the envelop. When Catherine returns, Bieta accepts the envelop of papers back. "Thank you, I will do that." Bieta looks at her daughter and says, "Are you all finished with your drink?"

Kasia nods and says, "Yes, Ma ma."

"What do you say to Officer Catherine?" Bieta says.

Kasia looks at Catherine and says, "Thank you for the drink, Officer Catherine."

Bieta stands, takes a sip out of her coffee and says, "Alright. Let's go then." Looking at Catherine again, Bieta says, "Thank you again, so much."
