Dice Mechanics Used

Declaration of Surfing Run

Surfers must declare to the 'judges' the tricks that they are going to attempt to perform on their surfing run.

  • Average Run - Difficulty is 6
  • Expert Run - Difficulty is 7
  • Professional Run - Difficulty is 8
  • All-Star Run - Difficulty is 9
  • Paddling to the Line-up Surfers will then paddle out to the line-up area, where the waves are breaking. Stamina + Swimming vs 6 The order of surfers will go in descending order, starting with the surfer who had the most successes. Ties go the surfer with the 'lower' dice pool. Priority The line-up also determines the surfer's priority, or right of way, to the better waves. The number of successes rolled during the Paddling will determine the surfer's priority.

  • Botched - Surfer misses out on finding the right wave.
  • 0 successes - Surfer is allowed a single reroll of the "Reading of the Wave", but must take the worst roll.
  • 1 success - Surfer is allowed a single "Reading of the Wave" roll.
  • 2 successes - Surfer is allowed a single reroll of the "Reading of the Wave", but must take the 2nd roll.
  • 3 successes - Surfer is allowed a single reroll of the "Reading of the Wave", and can choose the better roll.
  • 4+ successes - Surfer is allowed two rerolls of the "Reading of the Wave", and can choose the best roll.
  • Reading of the Wave While waiting for the 'right' wave to come in, surfers must be able to read the wave to see if it's right for them. Is it an A-Frame wave? Is it peaking too fast? Is it a point break wave that's gentle and mellow? Is the wave a mushy wave? Perception + Alertness vs 6

  • Botched - +2 difficulty
  • 0 successes - +1 difficulty
  • 1-2 successes - +0 difficulty
  • 3-4 successes - -1 difficulty
  • 5+ successes - -2 difficulty
  • Surfing / Performing Tricks The surfer rides out the wave, performing several tricks while riding the wave to completion. Dexterity + Athletics vs Declared Surfing Run + Reading of Wave The surfer's score is based on the number of successes. A botched roll at this stage means that the surfer "wiped out" during the run. See the "Adjusted Scoring" section for final scoring results. Example: Surfer A declares an average run (difficulty 6), and scores 3 successes on reading the wave (-1 difficulty). The new difficulty becomes 5. Example: Surfer B declares an all-star run (difficulty 9), and botches the reading of the wave (+2 difficulty). The new difficulty become 11. The Adjusted Scoring of the Competition. Surfing competitions are a judged event, so how successful a surfer is at performing tricks is balanced out with technical merit and showmanship. Sometimes, during the course of the run, the surfer may find that the juice and adrenaline is pumping and perform better than expected. Or that they were simply in "the zone" and performed text book maneuvers. Other times, they're able to perform tricks but not to the level of difficulty that they had hoped, or simply bailed out of a difficult move for a 'safer' trick. The "adjusted" score is based on the roll while performing the tricks. If the surfer's roll could have scored a success at a higher surfing run (Average, Expert, Professional, All-Star) without the wave modifiers, adjust the surfer's score accordingly. However, "natural" successes score higher than "adjusted" successes. Downgraded scores rank lower than upgraded scores. Example: Surfer A declares an average run (difficulty 6) with a -1 difficulty modifier. Surfer A rolls 1 4 5 6 7 7 9. "Natural" scoring is 4 Average. "Adjusted" scoring is 2 Expert. The 1 and 9 cancel each other, so the 7's would have resulted in 2 successes on an Expert run. Example: Surfer B declares an expert run (difficulty 7) with no modifier. Surfer B rolls 2 3 5 5 6 7 7. "Natural" scoring is 2 Expert. There is no "adjusted" scoring as the highest rolls were enough to score on the surfer's declared run. Example: Surfer C declares an all-star run (difficulty 9) with a -1 difficulty modifier. Surfer C rolls 2 2 3 4 5 7 7. The "Natural" scoring is 0 All-Star. "Adjusted" scoring is 2 Expert. Surfer B wins the competition. Surfer A comes in second with the upgraded score. Surfer C comes in last.

Yvette is at one of the fire pits with CJ and Hayden. They're eating a lunch of sausage in sourdough hotdog buns, toped with all kinds of delicious condiments. CJ and Yve are drinking some hard Limeaid while they enjoy the sunshine. Yvette looks at CJ and says, "A dress? Not a nice pair of jeans and a sleeveless blouse, or something?" She teases a bit, and says, "I haven't warn a dress in years. And no heels. That'd just be cruel."

Meanwhile, there is a lot of activity further up the beach. Surfers are queueing up on the sand, signing in, getting numbers, and lining up for their surf runs. A judging stand has been erected, where the judges can watch the surfers from a decent vantage point. It's getting close to competition time, and the energy on the beach is one of excited anticipation.

As the time draws closer and closer to the start of the competition, a middle aged woman dressed in white shorts and a blue tee with the 4 Ocean logo steps up to the microphone. "Before we begin, I would like to thank our various sponsors for helping put together this surfing competition. 4 Ocean is an organization that is removing plastics from the ocean." She holds up a bracelet with clear plastic beads, "The plastics that we've removed from the ocean are then recycled into these bracelets." She looks down at her notes, "It costs us $1 for every pound that we remove. By buying these bracelets, the proceeds help us maintain our fleet and allow us the means necessary to keep our oceans clean! Your attendance here today will help us continue our mission!"

"No heels." CJ agrees with a slight smile. "I'll pick something out for you and you can dress me up." She offers as an option as to clubbing wardrobe. "I haven't worn one in years either. Not since before the girls."

The woman then goes on to ramble on about The Surfrider Foundation and some other community groups that also take part in keeping the ocean clean. "But without further ado, I think it's time to get the competition started!" She twists towards the panel of judges, "Are you ready, judges?" There's cheering. She then looks to the surf, "Then surfers! Paddle out to the line-up!"

Daize claps where socially necessary during the announcer's introduction. However, she's looking towards the waves and smiling since high tide is kicking in (OOC: using creative license to push high tide to the opening of the competition), making the waves almost five feet in height. 4.82 ft to be exact. She carries a wooden surf board, made of Paulownia wood. The size of the board is about 7.5 feet in length and about 22 inches across. When the call for the competition to begin, she begins to paddle on out to where the waves break.

"Sounds like a plan," Yvette says to CJ, and then looks at the surfers as they queue up on the water. She plants her fingers between her lips and blows, sending out a loud shrill whistle. "Go Daize," she cheers her friend on. She does notice one other surfer and says to CJ, "Hey, I've met her before. She performs at the Royal Cajun sometimes. I didin't know she surfed."

Here to watch it would seem. Michael comes along to the popular surf spot. Dressed comfortably in board shorts and a t-shirt, the spectator finding a place to settle in and watch the events unfold.

"Well that's not an overly common thing to talk about. That's like me with my archery. It doesn't come up in conversation." CJ says, tipping back her drink and putting her arm around Yvette's shoulder.

Yvette "Yeah, and I've only talked to her like once." She shades her eyes from the sun as the surfers queue up. "She's incredibly athletic though. Does the arial acts on silk ribbons. Dances and spins up and down them. It's impressive. And beautiful."

There is an announcer providing color commentary as the surfers go to claim their wave and begin their ride. As this is an amateur event, the announcer uses the surfer lingo but on a very basic level. He's very encouraging and tries to rally crowd participating in cheering and what not. A camera man focuses on the different surfers as they complete their run, placing them on a big screen for all to see.

Zeus finds his wave, paddles hard, and drops in on the wave perfectly. He rides the face down, makes his first turn, looking confident and focused. He races along the face and is turning out to cat back towards the barrel, but the edge of his board catches and the kid gets dumped into the salty wash. His board gets sucked up the face of the wave first, the Zues quickly follows. Both board and boy are flung through the lip of the wave, and crash down hard into the relentless waters below. The cheering crowd is hushed by the hard wipeout, and wait in suspense. A half minute later that last forever, Zeus pops up from the white wash, down near the shore. He's heloding the lower half of his board victoriously overhead, a huge thrilled grin on his face. The nose of his board is still dancing chaotically in the rolling whitewash.

Michael winces for a moment when he sees poor Zeus wipe out. The man lifts off the sand a hint to try and get a better view of the water, looking for him until he sees him surface. Settling back in after that.

Chase paddles out to beyond the break. He takes his time looking for a good wave. he waits a long time, not getting a good read. His time is ticking down. Finally, he decides to go for one, regardless if it's a good wave or not -- time is running out. He starts to paddle in, getting up on the board. He glances ack and his eyes widen as he sees that wave is much bigger then he anticipated. He's committed now. He decides to try a barrel roll. He positions himself and gets in the barrel, squating down and riding the wave parallel to the front. It looks so promising, but then the tube starts to collapse. He tries to adjust but that puts him at an angle that takes him into the lip of the wave. That kills the ride. He gets washed out by the wave, disappearing for view for a long minute. Finally, he surfaces, shaking his head and lying on the board. He waves to the crowd and slowly starts to paddle back in.

Astrid is not an expert surfer, but manages to find a good wave. Her balance is fantastic: riding out the first turn with ease, carving a nice curve back in. But then the girl with the dreadlocks (drawn back into a high ponytail for the ride) gets too ambitious. She rides the face of her wave upward, fast, to attempt an aerial 360...

...and while Astrid herself manages the full rotation, the heavy board doesn't quite fly with her, leading to a rather spectacular wipeout. She isn't down so long as the kid and comes up spluttering and laughing, her cheeks red. coming back, she is still laughing, exhilarated despite the wipeout. As she angles toward Zeus and follows him to shore, she yells, "That went *way* better in rehearsal, I swear!" She, too, is grinning all the way as she looks back over to the other surfers.

Daize is next up. During the other people's rides, she straddles her board. You can see her cheering and holding up the shaka signs for all of the competitors in hopes that they do well. But then it's her turn. She paddles to the break, and then drops in on a wave. The left turn of the wave makes it so that her back to the shore. She rides the wave then performs a round house cutback, which is like performing a figure 8 on the wall of the wave. When she gets to the top of the wave, the slide of the 8 causes some spectacular spray but that's not the true purpose of the cutback. While cool looking, the main purpose is so that she can do an S turn at the bottom of the wave and gain velocity. Velocity for what? For going airborne! The blonde surfer must be in a zone because she's able to hit that 360 degree aerial and stick it! She wobbles a little but maintains her balance, even in the white water! She throws up both hands as she screams her own enjoyment for nailing the trick.

Yvette stands now, cheering on the surfers now and then as the make their runs. But she hollers and whistles that shrill whistle when Daize makes her run. She lifts her Mike's Hard Limeaid in the air as a toast to a run well performed before taking a sip and sitting back down. She set her bottle aside and, strangle enough, seems to check her nose, as if she suspects a nosebleed.

Chase paddles in to get something to drink and see if they'll be doing another run. He also needs to catch his breath from not being able to nail that run. He climbs out of the water and plants his board down in the sand, heading over to the water station.

Hey, when did Samara get here? Well it probably isn't to unusual to miss the shy surfer, out there with all her charms and her spring suit, and board shorts. She may also be the only one longboarding today. Such is life. She wasn't really here to be exceedingly competitive, wich is probably for the best as she catches her wave to far forwards and doesn't bring herself back enough for proper balance. It cuts off her noseriding far to much, and the focus on balance in turn means she isn't walking the board much at all. But in the end, she still shoots the barrel and manages to not completely embaress herself. Completely.

The announcer provides the necessary color commentary for each run. Even though several of the competitors wiped out, he has the wherewithall to keep it light and encouraging - not just for the competitors, but for those watching. In hopes of getting more people out there later on. In the end, the judges post their scores. "Congratulations! Miss Daisy Parker wins the 4 Ocean Surfing Competition! We'd like to thank everyone who participated, and we look forward to seeing you at our next event!"

CJ isn't quite as emphatic in her cheering as Yvette, but she still does at impressive tricks or probably a little louder at the more impressive wipeouts. She's kinda like that. She takes another drink of her spiked limeade, hey she's not driving, and says quietly, "If I was ten years younger and still had my competitive streak..." Chase unzips his wetsuit to his waist as he watches the rest of the competition. He smiles and starts to clap when the winner is announced. He grabs one of those hard lemonades and wanders over to CJ and Yvette, joining them. Overhearing the former's ocmments, he asks, "Oh, you surfed too? You should have gone out there!"

Daize pads her way to the shore, picking up and carrying her Paulownia wood surfboard tucked under her arm. She comes over to where the other surfers are gathering, knowing that these events are really more a social calling and oh, by the way, there's competition going on.

Hayden stretches. "I need to learn how to do that."

Zeus gives the various surfers fist bumps and shakas, "Killer run, Crazy Daisy," the kid says, thinking he's being clever by changer her name from Daize to Daisy, but in fact, is actually using her name without realizing. He takes the two half of his board back to wherever he's camping to grab a backup and head back out into the water.

Yvette smiles at Hayden, reaches over to one of her bags and says, "Daize offers lessons. We can get you up on a board in no time. She's fantastic. She's teaching me."

Klaus overhears part of the announcer's proclamation as he finally settles on part of a sand dune as his seat. The top two buttons of his shirt are unbuttoned, and it seems he is carrying nothing with him at the moment except for he bulging wallet in his right pocket. His gaze settles on the group of surfers gathered at the shore.

Yvette hands Hayden one of the many fliers she has in the bag, and looks at CJ. "That did look fun - so many good surfers. Come out with me sometime," she encourages CJ. "I'd love to be out there surfing with you." She takes a long drink from her bottle, finishing off her second.

Michael claps for the surfers as they return to shore and the winners are announced. The man rises to his feet and brushes the sand off as he rises to head off the beach.

Samara for her part, drifts off to the side a little sith her massive board, setting it down besides her as she settles in cross legged on the sand and well... watches.

Astrid props her board and grins at Daize, flashing a shaka. She heads straight for wherever there's water, first thing, but on the way she makes sure to fist-bump Zeus.

Hayden takes the flier and walks towards Daizers. "Teach me how to do that?"

Daize makes sure to bump fist Zeus, "Grommet dude!" She laughs merrily, giving him some acknowledgement as well. Still, she goes to be with the rest of the group. Her lopsided smile is wider, obviously, as she's pumped with excitement and adrenaline. She gives Chase and Astrid a shaka gesture. "You guys did awesome!" And that's not condescending in tone. Despite the wipeouts, she seems impressed and trying to be as encouraging as possible. She then takes note of Samara's presence and gives her a shaka as well, "Dude!"

Chase grins at Daize, waving to him. Not as good as you. It was fun going out with some other people, even if I didn't win." He smiles and waves to Astrid and Samara, not nowing them but friendly with the camaraderie of surfers.

As the judges remove themselves from their booths, it's soon replaced with a DJ to play some music. After all, there are those beach tents that are set up with food from local vendors of Prospect. Just about any kind of food found in Prospect will be found here at the beach. After all, it's free marketing!

Daize smiles to Chase, nodding her head, "Dude, I swear I thought you almost had it! That would have been sweet if you could have recovered from that barrel collapsing." She shakes her head, "But that whitewater sucks ass some time. So easy to nosedive."

Yvette grabs a third drink, but doesn't yet open it. "Hey, music," she mentions to CJ. We could practice dancing on the beach." She grins, eyes watching the group of surfers as they exchange their watery war stories and regale each other with the details of the day - spectacular wipe outs; heroic arials; and other edgy maneuvers.

Chase grins at Daize, taking a swig of his hard lemonade. "Totally. Watch me come out tomorrow and nail it without any trouble. I guess that's the perils of an audience. The pressure and all."

Samara is not very exciting, usual, watching the couples and what not. Slowly she starts to hum, pulling a bit of driftwood up from nearby on the beach, running her fingers over it for a second. Studying.

Pushing himself off his sand perch, Klaus slowly makes his way back up the way he came from.

Daize nods to Chase, "Yea, it's like a cosmic harmony out there. Some days, you nail it. Other days, washing machine, dude." She laughs at that. She shrugs, "It all balances out in the end, man." She then smiles to CJ and Yvette as they discuss dancing. She, herself, bobs her head in time to the music, appreciating whatever is being played. Still, she can't help but take notice of Samara again. She wanders over and offers up an shaka to her, "Aloha." She grins, "Killer longboard, man."

Astrid comes over to offer Chase a smile, lifting her camping bottle in a silent toast. "Nailed it yesterday too, I bet," she says. "You out here a lot?"

Hayden just watches and then dances along to music.

Chase grins at Daize. "Yeah... Well, I'm already looking forward to getting out there again." He says, taking a chug of his emoande and swaying to the music a little. He looks up as Astrid wanders over. He smiles. "Oh, I just discovered this place. It's amazing. I'll probably be out here a lot more going forward. I'm usually out on the water every day!

Samara blinks once, looking up for a moment, her head tilting towards Daize, then over to the big yellow taxi of an old board besides her. "Oh ummm... thank you. It is sort of what I grew up learning. Not...very good for exciting competitions tho."

Daize nods her head to Samara, "Yea, they usually have their own separate events. Still, it's pretty cool." She offers a lopsided grin, "Just wanted to say hey." She nods once and then drifts back to the others.

Astrid grins. "Lucky," she says to Chase. "I only get maybe one day, if I'm lucky. You a student or something?"

Chase laughs, shaking his head at Astrid. "No.. nothing so glamorous. I just get by and try to spend as much time as I can on the beach!"

CJ gives a smile, "You are afraid to dance at a club, but you want to do it on the beach?" Sha asks Yvette as she finishes the last of her drink as well, "Sure, I can step on your feet for a bit." She says, though likely with her general aptitude at most things physical, she's underplaying her ability,

"Oh umm.... thank you." Samara gives a small smile to Daize, before she flees. Honest enough. She turns the driftwood in her hands for a moment, then humms, reaching back for her small bag to take out a small knife.

"Yeah, well," Yvette says, holding up her now open third bottle of hard limeade. "I'm two drinks of courage in, and I can blame my bad dancing on the sand." Yvette gets to her feet, seeming determined to dance with CJ while still holding onto her drink. It's likely some beach-boys song playing over the PA, so Yvette does some version of the twist, because that's in the same era, right?

Daize smiles to Astrid as she wanders back, "Betty, that was an awesome aerial. That would have been awesome if your board wouldn't have gone sailing off." Again, not condescending or critical. "I'm sure you could have landed that nine times out of ten."

Astrid gives Chase an envious grin, and laughs when Daize gives that compliment. "Maybe seven. I've never spent much time surfing. Should just tried something small, but..." She lifts a shoulder. "I like to fly."

Chase grins at Daize. "Yea... It's ture of us all." He looks back at Astrid. "Betty? Is that your name? I'm Chase." He says, offering his hand. "It's nice to meet you!"
