A call comes in just as Trey has just biked back to Kitten Itza after an impromptu BBQ at the beach bungalow with the Frog Brothers, Jackie, and Branton. When he looks at the screen, he sees the name of one of his family’s Kinfolk. He answers, surprised to get a call at this hour.

“Hello?”

“Steven, it’s Mark Snowfall. I’m here in Prospect. You said you needed a few things, so I wanted to meet with you and drop them off.”

Trey ohhs. “Hey, Mark. You didn’t have to come all this way, but I appreciate it. You want to meet me where I live now?”

“Yeah, sounds good.” Mark takes down the address, and they both ring off.

Trey picks up a book and hangs out at the main entry to the facility with a book light, keeping himself busy while the Kinfolk gets there. The book is an actually-decent one about the resonances of the planets and what they mean in the night sky.

He wasn’t expecting a *rental truck* to show up, but…

“Mark, man, what the hell?” Trey looks surprised at the whole thing – pleased, but surprised.

The Kin fellow, who looks to be in his early forties, a little darker than Trey himself, short-haired, nondescript, holds up a hand. “You said you needed an electric bike, so we did some dealing with one of the local casino tribes who had one that got returned to them after the guy who won it got into some issues. Long story. Anyway…” He walks to the back of the truck, and adds, “Picked up the laptop, too, and got it set up on the plane out here. Should be all you need, but if you need help, I’ll put you in touch with my son, he’s the computer guy.”

Trey follows, and says, slowly, “They have e-bikes as prizes?”

Mark shakes his head. “Ebikes? No, man, this is a Harley Live Wire. The owner was gonna give it to his girlfriend but she wanted new, so he had it on hand and we got it from him for a good price.”

Trey’s mouth opens a bit in surprise as Mark opens the back of the truck to reveal the bike, a charging station, and the laptop box. “Holy shit, that’s a beauty.”

“Sure is. I’m jealous,” Mark admits with a grin. “Come on, you gotta admit this is a lot nicer than an ebike.” He’s cajoling, possibly afraid of having fucked up.

“No kidding,” Trey says, walking in to check out the bike, then walk it down the ramp and out. “Red. Shiny. Niiice.”

Mark grabs the laptop box and says, “So, lemme get you situated here. I also set up a regular deposit for you for living expenses now that you settled down. Staying here, it’s gonna go a lot further. I also got some licensing and registration stuff for it expedited; all the paperwork is in the laptop box. You’ll wanna carry the registration when you ride it. Also, got a line on a driving school that’ll help you out getting used to it. The instructor won’t be... uncomfortable for you.”

Trey grins, walking the bike to the garage building and finding a spot for it to rest. “Oh, I can’t wait to show this to people. Mark, you did great. More than I expected. Seriously, thank you.”

The other man waves his hand and says, “Family,” and leaves it at that, but smiles despite himself at the praise. Cats are a proud lot, and their kin, no less so.

“Just… give everyone my thanks. I don’t think I’ll need anything else. I don’t have to pay rent at this point, so my expenses aren’t much. I live cheap. But the monthly’s appreciated. Sure, I know it’s part of the usual thing for us trueborn, but… still, it’s appreciated.” He pauses. “Hey, come on in, lemme get you a drink and something to eat?”

He hands Trey the laptop and shakes his head. “I’m getting the redeye back as soon as I return the truck. I appreciate the offer, but my son’s wife is due any day now and… ya know. We want to be there for her when the baby comes. Just in case.”

Trey claps the man’s shoulder lightly. “Good luck to you and to her for a healthy birth, strong baby, strong mom.”

The two men part ways, and Trey takes the smaller of the new toys upstairs to his suite, setting up the laptop. It’ll be a lot easier than emailing through his phone, which has seen better days, and doing more searches and saving data will be more feasible as well. And reading…

He smiles and settles in to write an email to Casey, and then one to Belle, to let both know he’d acquired the laptop. He doesn’t mention the bike yet – no need, really.

Tomorrow, he’ll get to the instructor and set up lessons.
