The Minefield
Steinar, Ben and Heidi comes across an ambush against lupus Kinfolk
IC Date 12/27/2020
IC Time Yes
Players Steinar, Ben, Heidi as ST
Location About a mile outside Stonecreek

It's cold in the forest. Morning. 15.0C. Cool weather for Southern California. The temperature was frigid this morning but now it's beginning to warm up. And with it, some of the critters living out in the forest have come out to hunt from their dens. A cool breeze moves through the larger trees about a mile away from the Fenrir Creek territory. It's quiet, relaxing, and somewhat peaceful, until.... Boom! An echo of an explosion overturns earth in the near distance from where Ben and Steinar are outside. A female voice that sounds like Heidi's shouts out, "Nooooo!" It sounds like a panic cry out.

Normally patrols were quieter - thankfully. The boom from an explosion has Ben jumping up and to the side, uncertain of the direction for where the problem happened. Then he hears Heidi's voice. A growl and he is tearing off in the direction he heard that from.

What Steinar Sees: If you head toward the explosion you are going to see movement up in the tree line. Someone is up there wearing camo with military looking netting with leaves over the helmet. And they have a rifle. You might even /smell/ them before you see it. One human up in a tree. They are a distance away from Heidi and whatever she is looking at on the forest floor.

It might be anyones guess what Steinar does during the nights, really. For certain is that he does not really use any of the offered bunks in any of the houses at Stone Creek. Does he sleep outside? It is possible. He looks, smells and carries himself like a man who's lived his entire life off-grid without any real means, no money and not want for any. Being outside is his natural state, no matter the windchill factor. Not that California has much of that. With the sound from the explosion and the voice calling out, the Godi stands up from the tree he had been sitting at. It had all the hallmarks of him having slept there (but not necessarily as a human). He lifts his head up and sniffs a bit in the air, to then start heading in that direction as well. The man up in the tree is new. He has so far not seen anyone at Stone Creek with such a setup. He narrows his eyes, and before he does anything at all, he reaches out with his sense..

..and magic indeed. The trick taught by the Wyld things is a useful one for any Garou of Rank. Steinar reaches out, gathering up the Wyld energies in the area to then simply release them. They flow out from it, reaching any and all Weaver technologies surrounding him. The Wyld energies are strong, potent, and for a few moments all technologies just freeze up.

The hidden shooter up in the treeline targets Ben through his scope as he sees the large man running toward the human female up ahead. The two garou might not see it yet but Heidi is standing with her back to the shooter as well. Both her hands are up as precaution, as she is looking at a shot and downed mother wolf laying on the forest floor about 12 feet in front of her. She has three young wolf pups at her side trying to nudge her to get back up, but her blood is soaking into the pine needles on the forest floor. Six feet away from the new pups is an explosive black burned hole in the ground, no bigger than a shield indent. And there's more blood and bits of fur spread out around the debris. Heidi looks on horrified, as one may quickly figure out that one of the pups detonated something under the ground as it ran to her. She's looking down at the ground now, trying to figure out where there might be /more/ bombs. "Fucking trap!" Her voice wavers.

The shooter aims at Heidi but quickly moves to aim right at Ben. He's a bigger target now and moving into his trap. *click. Nothing happens.

Ben growls still, smelling blood in the air. He hears Heidi's comment, nodding. "Don't move. Just... don't move. If there are traps about, I don't want you hurt." His larger frame moves to block any shots at Heidi, eyes scanning the area from the threat.

Steinar watches the aan aim and shoot.. watching the rifle fail as intended. He does not wait, he looks to the side, towards Heidi and Ben and calls out, "Dólg is upon us! Vándr things in the trees! Cowards in the trees!" And those last words are cut out as his body suddenly explodes into the warform; clothes giving way for fur. Face contorting into wolfs massive maw and his ears turning long and pointy. Muscles and power, the huge hulking Warform lets out a loud howl - almost as if to challenge the man in the tree - as he rushes towards the trunk and digs into it; starting to climb upwards!

The shooter immediately drops his rifle since it seems to be jammed. He reaches down for his side arm and pulls it out to aim at BIG BEN when he moves right in front of the human female. *click. It's also not working!

Heidi hears Ben calling to her to not move. "Ben! I think I stepped into a mine field. A trap!" She sounds horrified. "One of the pups..." yep, it's dead. Kinfolk pups too. They may recognize the mother on the ground had a litter awhile ago they were keeping an eye on. Her belly is still moving. She's breathing, but completely unconscious. Heidi hears Steinar's yell out followed by his howl and she desperately wants to turn around now when she hears warning of shooters! But she does not. She keeps her feet firmly planted in the exact same spot she was in. "I can't move!"

The massive Crinos that is Steinar does not move normally, though. He moves fast, the actions almost a bit of a blur as he digs his claws into the tree and launches himself upwards. It is not so much climbing as he is almost throwing himself upwards. One, two, three such grabs before he reaches the spot where the Hunter is. And without waiting, without halting, the Crinos that is Steinar simply launches himself forward. He slams his entire mass into the Hunter, driving them both forward. Out of the tree. With no regard for his own limbs, he tackles the Hunter out from the tree and follows him along for the drop to the ground; slamming into it with a massive thud.

The hunter hits the ground with a hard and heavy impact. Bits of debris from the tree fall down to rain around them. Leaves. Bits of bark. The camo netting falls, and then the mans ammo pack clunks down off a branch and hits some tree roots. Gravity bites hard. The wind got knocked right out of the human beneath the massive Crinos and his ribs crunch under that camou suiting he's got on. Tattoos and war glyphs for Wyrm Kin run up the neck of the painted foot soldier, and all along the wrist and right forearm of the assassin. He grits his teeth showing blood as the two face off and it surely seems he knows he's done for.

The massive Crinos that is Steinar reaches down and grabs a hold of the fallen Kin of the Enemy. Huge claws hands grabs the mans body and yanks him up from the ground, before wrapping strong arms around his body, to hold him still. He lets out a growled sound, <<You!>> he looks to Ben, <<You're Forseti! I heard them speak of you at the Creek. Do your duty, Forseti. Interrogate this fool, then Judge him as is fitting.>> His strong arms makes sure the enemy he's holding can't get away. Or, hopefully not get away!

Ben nods. "Pick up the pups." He offers to Heidi, shifting to Crinos after. Looking to the wolfkin, he nods. <<Stay calm. Do not move.>> If permitted, he will scoop up the wounded and Heidi - using his height to offer some protection as they move closer to the fallen enemy.

Ben looks to Heidi and the pups. "Don't move. Be calm." He comments, growling out in wolf-speech after that. Then he turns to the fallen hunter and the Crinos. A frown - the man steps forward, peering at the fallen man. "You have a limited time to explain yourself. Do so now."

The Wyrm kin now on the ground is pinned and feels the hurt of a heavy Crinos pressing right down on top of him. He spits blood to the side and struggles to his arms up to his vest, but he isn't able to move! It's a furious battle at first but he's puffing and huffing to breathe now even where he is. He gets sight of Big Ben coming forward, and he guesses he's garou by his sheer size alone. "Eat shit and die, tree humper. Fuck you!" He looks up at Steinar, "And Fuck you... you Gaian hair flea bag!" He growls.

Heidi looks to where the pups are and the distance and nods to Ben. She suddenly spreads her arms out as if wanting to ... fly. She tries to will herself to shift. Maybe she looks like a humanoid trying to make airplane noises, or simply looks constipated. Whatever she is doing, she is trying to HULK THE FUCK OUT and spread her wings. It's... very much not working. Like a young Peter Parker who can't get his web spinner to work. "Damn it!"

The massive warform that is Steinar keeps his body pressing down on the enemy. He is not letting go, and it should be clear from the tension in the Godi that he wants nothing more than to kill the man under him. But it seems equally clear that he is deferring to the decision of the present Forseti; the Judge. He does lift his head, though, <<Keep still..>> he growls out, then stops himself. He forces a few human words from his mouth; a thing a Crinos can do, but boy is it hard, "Move. Not!" he calls out. To Heidi?

The wounded mother wolf is still laying still and bleeding from a gunshot wound. The smaller three pups with her are staying close to her out of fear from the initial explosion that went off. Heidi looks at the wolf as if her heart is breaking but she is also furious at the shooter from hurting one of their own! Steinar warns her not to move and she stops with the arm movement. She can't leap twelve feet. For now, she looks upward at the trees. What branches go where, and how close they could get if they rigged something. "She's bleeding!" She tells Ben and Steinar. "She's really hurt!"

The shooter kin laughs diabolically when he hears that. It's pressured laughter, since Steinar is still pressing down.

The large Crinos that is Steinar lifts his head up a bit, looking at Ben, <<Judge this fool, Forseti. Then I can tend to the injured. I can heal the wolf.>> he growls out. His massive claws curl in a bit, digging into the skin of the foe he is holding down to give him a bit of .. pain. Drawing some blood.

Ben roars. "It is of the Wyrm. I judge Garou, not our enemy. Kill it. Quickly." He snaps, anger raising. To Heidi. "Do. Not. Move." He frowns, looking to the ground to try to spot the traps, turning back to face the wounded. "The ground has mines."

The shooter hears the sentence the Forsetti gives and he tries to struggle again to reach for his vest. It's muscle not getting anywhere below the Crinos! The Wyrm kin continues to curse the two of them out, "Hail and glory to the Father! The true creator and not that Mother BITCH you all worship!" He continues to spew Wyrmish rants at the two.

Heidi calls out to the two garou, "I'm not moving! The pups haven't left their mother's side yet. Just the... one, that .. didn't... " yeah it's dead. "I can't tell by the ground what was disturbed or moved. It's all brushed with crap thrown all over the ground to hide it. Ben, I'd have to get more running space to shift. I can't do it here. I'm stuck!"

The massive Warform that is Steinar, gives a growl to Ben, <<Judgement is given!>> he howls out, after which he slams his head down into the head of the man under him. Its meant to daze him, not injure him. Daze him long enough so that Steinar the Warform can let go with one claw. He grabs the Fang Dagger that hangs from his neck, snatches it loose to then, with a firm grip on it, ram the dagger into the mans neck. Aiming for the spinal cord to snap it. Then, as a final act, he activates the Fetish, letting the dagger -bite- hard into the wound.

Ben nods, still scouring the ground for any sign of the mines. Triggers, disturbed earth - any and all signs. "You lifting your arms and raising up could be a problem. You are not abandoned, nor are the wolves. We will get you. Be calm, be patient." A glance over as the dagger is driven home. "He will answer for his crimes in Gaia's eyes." Again, his eyes go to the Kin in danger. He shifts to wolf form, hoping his keen senses can help find the trouble.

Ben transforms into a white wolf.

The wyrm kin assassin mock grrs back at the Crinos as the blow comes in to stun him! In the next second, his neck is snapped. The bite of the dagger has him dead with that crack of spinal bone. It's crude, harsh, and effective. He bleeds out from his neck as his cold eyes glaze over.

Heidi's voice wavers. "Ok, no flapping arms. Vibration could set these things off you think?" She starts to quiet her voice. "Fuck, Ben, don't get too close. I don't want you to lose paws or legs." She frowns. Not meaning to sound scared, but she is. Her gumption allows her to put a brave face on, but she's more worried about the baby pups trying to come toward her for comfort, since their mother isn't moving. One of the smaller pups starts to whine, <<awoo.>>

Steinar the Warwolf stands up from his fallen foe. He pulls the Fang Dagger from the mans neck to then look at Ben as he takes to wolf, <<Good idea, brother. We can smell the metal from the ground. The explosives.>> he then takes a few moments, concentrating, to let himself slowly flow into the form of wolf. A large, great timber wolf. He puts his nose to the ground, to then begin to sniff his way towards the fallen wolves. Hoping to find a safe path.

Huge Gray Wolf's muzzle is to the earth - sniffing and scenting. His nose wrinkles, smelling some of the mines. <<Four.>> He chuffs out. He notes the path, looking to the other Garou with him. <<Can you smell the others?>>

The large timber wolf that, before, was Steinar, joins the Forseti in sniffing out the mines. He can feel them. Smell them. Plastic. Metal. Explosive chemicals. Oh, he can smell them alright. He lets out a growl, nose to the ground he begins to methodically sniff out the areas where they are. Each time he finds one, he uses his paws to dig around them a bit, to mark them out, <Yes. More here.> he growls, turning then to concentrate on finding the rest. He can small them, <Here. More.> he howls a bit.

Heidi watches as the two wolves work together to find a pattern of the mines in the ground all around her. It's quite frightening, as she happened to walk right by two of them to get to the mother wolf that was shot. This was most likely the intention of the shooter. Draw in more victims and happily kill the wolf kin or whomever came by. "That sick evil... hunter..." She looks to the two. "Can you get to the mother wolf now? Can I move, or does someone want to carry me out of the Vietnam war zone?" She looks relieved they can sniff out what is beneath the ground. "Don't even ask me how you are planning to detonate."

Huge Gray Wolf nods, following suit to dig around the found dangers - carefully. Once the way is marked, he nods to the other wolf. <<Can you heal the mother? I can carry the others out.>> There is a shift and shimmer, the big wolf moving to Hispo to carry other easier. Ben transforms into a large gray wolf.

The large timber wolf, sure now that they have all the mines found, turns to start walking up towards the wounded wolf. As he does, he stride easily from wolf into his human form; born of man after all. He pops his neck a bit, "Yes. I will heal the mother, if it is not too late. You carry the pups." he looks to Heidi, "We know the mines now. I will dig them out later. I think I can get you out as well. I can render the mine useless, as I rendered the Hunters rifle useless." he does not stop though until he stands by the injure wolf. He kneels down, "You will be ok now." he tells it, reaching his hand down to place his palm over the bleeding wound.

<-------------=============++++++++++++++++++++++++=============------------->

The mother wolf growls low while Steinar kneels beside her. She only opens her eyes to slits but she senses him talking to her. Laying very still, only a front paw twitches when he lays healing hands on her. The healing is enough to dislodge the bullet as the tissues begin to repair. All the wolf pups gather around his lower legs because he's warm and brush up against him. One tiny pup even paw, paw, paws at his left shin. <<wuf.>> Heidi watches on from where she is standing and looks in awe as Steinar kneels down to perform his work as a practiced Godi. She peers over toward Ben and also looks hopeful. His nose will make sure she doesn't get too close to any of the mines, right? But then she's distracted by the really cute pups that surround Steinar.

Steinar watches the wolf a few moments, then nods once, "It's not the best, but it will do. The wolf will have to be tended to. The rest of the wound healing naturally. But I have stopped the bleeding and the bullet is out." he pushes himself to his two feet to then look to Ben, "Will you guide the wolf and pups out of here? I will get the Kinfolk free." he looks to Heidi, "Hopefully without detonating her legs."

Eikþyrnir moves over towards Heidi and the pups. In his form, he gently scruffs the pups, putting them up on his broad shoulders. <<We can get them out. I will carry them if needed.>> He chuffs to the pups, trying to keep them calm, before heading towards the mother wolf. Heidi watches Steinar giving direction and she is trying her best to mostly hold her breath and not make too much vibration with shifting weight around her feet. "Wait, whats this about detonating my legs? Is that Godi humor I hear?" She smirks at Steinar, half watching Ben collecting baby pups. "That better be humor, Steinar." She reaches her arms out toward him and wiggles her fingers. "Get me out of here, pretty please?" The mother wolf slowly gets up on all fours and she shakes out her blood matted fur. She looks at Ben who is collecting her pups but growls low as she starts to follow him. If any pups are left on the ground she'll nip one up with her mouth to carry. <<awoo>> the baby pup chuffs as Ben carries them on his back.

"Humour?" Steinar wonders, looking at Heidi, "I do not have a sense of humour. Never really had much use for it." he moves over to where the Kinfolk stands, "Ok, mark a path in your mind. When I tell you to run, you will run that path. Fast. Ok? And do not step where we dug out the markers for the mines." he looks to Ben, "I will report back to the Creek once I have freed her and dug the mines out." he tells him. He crouches down by the foot that Heidi has .. most likely on the mine, "Ok. Are you ready?"

Eikþyrnir is getting the pups and mother clear of the explosives - making certain they are no where near the trouble. <<Keep them clear.>> He explains to the mother wolf, setting the pups down once they are well away from the mines. Eyes go back to Steinar and Heidi.

Heidi looks at Steinar and she tries to convey she isn't trembling. She really wants to say /no/, but he looks really convincing at her. "Yes, I will do as you say and run that-a-way." She points the path through the markers they dug with their wolfish paws minutes ago. "I can't believe I'm like... ok!" Her blue eyes look down at the Godi, and nods. She braces herself to go and rolls her shoulders. Ready. Set...

Steinar rolls Manipulation(3) + Crafts(1) (4 dice) vs 9 for 0 successes.
Roll for Jam Technology (WP used), to make the mine mechanism fail
<-------------=============++++++++++++++++++++++++=============------------->

Steinar takes a breath, "I am serious, too. I will render the mines trigger mechanism inert. But what I do is .. costly. So you better not stop." he says, "But only run when I tell you to." he then takes a breath. He reaches out with his senses, lifts his right hand up with fist clenched. He then opens it, and as he does he goes, "RUUUN!" before he dives to the side himself.

Heidi trains with Theron -the berserker, every morning 0430. If Steinar tells her to sprint run like her life depended on it, you better believe she can do it! She pushes off and runs like the pressure plate beneath the ground is going to explode her into little bits! Her legs dodge the other markings and then she gets the hell out of that mine field. When she does stop, she is leaning over panting. And she goes behind a tree, and throws up.

BOOM!

Eikþyrnir keeps positioned between the wolves and the explosions, making sure they don't get further injured from the debris. Eyes track both Heidi and Steinar's scramble for cover, the hispo growling low.

All the woof pups whine behind Big Ben's bigger wolfish form as if the explosion hurt their ears. They didn't like it. Neither does Momma Wolf. She tries to herd her pups with her and nudges them all with her nose, scent marking them. Now that she is healed, she starts to lead them away from the trouble and the humans. It's time to go back to her den.

Was Steinar close enough to catch some of the blast? If he did, he can most likely regenerate it. And he did dive for cover. At least that is one less mine to worry about and have to dig out. He looks up, letting out a grunt; some of that concussive force and spray of dirt and rock surely caught him, "Well, still here." he grunts out, pushing up on his hands, "Your legs still attached?" he calls out to Heidi, "Forseti? All pups safe?"

Heidi holds the bark of the tree and pokes her head out from behind it. She didn't throw up! Nope. "All good. Legs still attached." She reports back in and moves back out where they can see her. From the short distance, she looks at the Godi, "Intact yourself, Steinar?" Her eyes look to Ben, and then the Mother wolf leading her pups away somewhere else.

Ben shifts into his human form.

Ben returns to his human form, nodding. He watches as the wolves trail away, then looks back to the others. "All accounted for, heading home it would seem." There's an edge to his voice, the man's eyes going back to the dead hunter. "This is becoming too common."

Steinar looks to Ben, "This has happened before?" he wonders, "That means the enemy knows the location of your home. And not only that, knows your Patrol routes since he could come in here, dig mines into the ground and set up a sniper spot without being detected." he shakes his head, "Is the Jarl asleep on his post?" he mutters, "Well. I'll dig out the mines. I'll undress the corpse, cleanse it and burn the body and the materials. Dismantle the weapons. Not sure what the fuck to do with the mines, though. Should probably set them off somewhere." From the looks of things, Steinar is clutching his side a bit. But his reply to Heidi is, "I am fine."

Heidi replies to both, "It is as if the Wyrm is sending out minions to test our defenses. See what they can take while they judge our weakest points. If we mapped all the recent attacks lately, it might show a pattern. But Bergin did warn that so many Fenris coming into one spot, might mean war is coming. Bigger than the one down in Florida when Zoe's people were rescued, maybe." She looks to where Steinar is clutching his side. "I have a small first-aid kit in my pack if you want me to take a look at your side?" She mentions to Steinar as she digs out a breath mint for herself from the same pack. "I won't comment on Ironsides. But he doesn't come out of his cabin very often." As if that says everything.

A nod from the large man. Ben frowns. "They have been hunting in the woods now, specifically going for wolves. Young pups, too." A shake of his head. "One shot Freya." There's a shake of his head. "There is no Jarl - a Jarl leads a sept." He says, point blank. "We have a Tribal leader, one who is doing what he can - though I am not certain how much of any of this he is aware of." A nod to Steinar. "We need to detonate them somewhere safe. Is there a quarry around?"

Steinar looks to Heidi once more, "I am fine." he repeats, sounding awfully stubborn about it, too, "And yes, it does sound like they are probing the defences." he turns his head to Ben, "I am not sure about quarries. But I am sure we can find a suitable place that will not cause too much damage." he eyes the corpse, "He titulates himself Jarl. Perhaps when the time is right, education will be had in that regard." he then moves in to start undressing the corpse, "I have to get rid of this first, though. Cleanes it, burn it."

Heidi nods to Ben, "They are looking to kill us all. Wolf pups are suspected kin, and they are looking to eradicate. We should be having more patrols outside Stonecreek, and no one should be patrolling alone. I was only going for a walk myself. We're about, a mile from the Creek?" She gestures. "This is close to home. Way too close to home." She watches Steinar go through the assassin's things. "He killed one of the pups." Frowning deeply, she says, "Can I help with anything?" She knows Ben will assist with the rituals.

Ben nods, looking over to Heidi to make sure she's really all right. "We'll cleanse and such. We might bury the body, or detonate it with the mines?" He suggests. "Any injuries from the hunter?" He frowns, looking over to where the dead pup was.

Steinar looks to Heidi, "Yes. Gather wood. For a pyre." he replies, "We'll burn this shitbag in a pit. We built a real pyre for the pup that was killed." he looks to Ben, "You help me with the Ritual." he says. Once the corpse is undressed, he starts to prepare for the ritual.

Heidi is staying far away from the marked areas along the ground and does approach where the shooter fell. There's no sniffed out mines where he was setting up shoot a kin shop. With her phone camera, she takes a snap shot of the wyrm kin's glyphs on his neck and up his right arm. "Evidence. For the others." Then she is up and moving off to get the wood asked for.

Steinar rolls Charisma(3) + Rituals(3) (6 dice) vs 7 for 1 successes.

<-------------=============++++++++++++++++++++++++=============------------->

The Ritual itself is easy enough to complete. It is one of the most common of Rituals used by the Garou. A natural way of establishing the natural balance of things in all items. And Steinar is not about to burn anything that might have taint, lest he release any vestige of that taint into the air. So, that said, he starts with enacting the ritual as Heidi goes to collect wood.

He has performed this ritual many times before and thus guides Ben through the paces. The proper items are gathered and the circle is drawn. The smoldering branch is held up and once it is time for the howl, he gives the sign for it.

In Lupus, the Forseti sits back and lets out an earnest howl - trying to drive away the evil mojo and taint left behind by the hunter.

With the ritual completed, Steinar puts the smoldering branch down. He nods once to Ben, "Thank you. It was good that you were here." he looks around, "Well. Time to burn a body." he says, "Help me dig the pit." he then takes to his wolf form. With it, he begins to dig in the dirt, setting on to the task of digging a pit for a body to burn in.

Heidi comes back with a few armfuls of wood she picked up in the forest. When she drops them near the dug pit, she begins to break them into smaller pieces. Some of the longer thin trees that were felled she has to snap over one knee. "I tried to find older pieces that look dry." She's gone for a few more minutes and then returns again with another armful of stuff she dropped rushing to get back from the first round.

Ben starts digging a hole, using the large paws to clear at the softer earth. He's focused on the work, channeling his anger from the injured mother and the slain pup.

And so the hours pass. The pit is dug and the body is dropped in. The fire lit. The body of the enemy, along with its clothes, are burnt without any real ceremony. Its just trash to be rid of. But the little pup that died? All pieces of the dead wolf is found. Steinar builds a small pyre for it, aloft upon a rock he finds. He then sets it a blaze, saying a prayer in his Clans native tongue to the spirit of the wolf. The pit would be filled in, once the body was burnt after which Steinar directs anyone still with him here to help dig out the mines. It would be the final task. To dig out the mines, take them and the grenade found in the clothing of the Hunter along with his amunition and gun to a safe place. To detonate it all. Gone. Out of mind. Out of sight. Nothing left, nothing remaining.
