Alan has political influence in Prospect as well, owing to the large sums of money he's capable of donating to campaigns. Local politicos might know of him. Alternately, left wing activists and 99%ers have probably read articles on the internet that villify him as some kind of mega-wealthy evil prince. Alan is related to Schulyer, and followers of high fashion might know that his penthouse was a refuge for her in New York, or might have even seen him at the occasional social function.
