Here are game mechanics for when a PC changes race and/or subrace due to IC events.

  • If you were approved as your "new" race/subrace and just want to RP through your IC change, then go ahead and do so.
  • The remainder of these rules are for PCs who were approved as something else.
  • This is a work in progress, based on past practice as best we can remember or reconstruct it, and is subject to adjustment.

General principles:

  • See relevant cheat sheet for context.
  • See '+rules multiclass' for limits on multiple power sets.
  • "Refund" means that you lose a stat, and gain the same amount of XP that you would have spent to raise that stat from 0 to its previous level (regardless of whether you actually got it via baseline points or freebies or XP or a mix thereof).
  • Backgrounds and merits that would become relevant can be bought with staff approval (merits: 3 XP per dot).
  • Backgrounds and merits that would become irrelevant are refunded.
  • Flaws that would become irrelevant must be bought off (2 XP per dot).
  • Flaws may be gained with staff approval.
  • Things that "must be declared at chargen" are generally also okay to declare during conversion (e.g. if you're Embraced as an Assamite, you can choose to become an Assamite sorcerer)
  • Banality and/or Faith should be updated if appropriate, either immediately or over time (does not cost XP).
  • Free Lore from '+rules lores' does not apply to your new race, you must buy it up with XP (does not require additional IC justification).
  • Old incompatible powers (if any) are refunded. New powers must be bought up from 0 with XP. Ignore normal chargen baselines; all old powers are refunded, and all new powers must be bought.
  • A PC who goes through this type of conversion must wait at least one month before going through another one. If it ICly happens sooner, then they fall into torpor or something until the OOC time limit has passed.

Mortal to vampire

  • Update Race, Sire, Faction, Clan
  • Allocate 3 dots to one or more in-clan disciplines
  • Can buy Generation background with XP at the usual rate (not the higher rate in '+rules generation')
    • If Embraced by another PC, must buy Generation background as needed so that your Generation Rating is one removed from theirs. (Example: if they're 10th, then you would be 11th, so you must buy two dots.)

Ceasing to be supernatural or mortal+

In any of these cases:

  • You lose all relevant stats with no XP refund.
  • If you were multiclassing, then you convert to an appropriate type of mortal+ instead of becoming mortal.

Mage

A mage targeted by a successful Gilgul becomes mortal, though they'll probably be targeted for PK immediately afterward.

Changeling

A kithain may become mortal, handwaving that they succumbed to Banality before they could be rescued.

  • This also makes them subject to the Mists, though they may still remember another kithain or kinain as "a friend from work" or the like.
  • Inanimae can't do this. Nunnehi / hsien / any other subrace will be reviewed if/when someone actually requests it.

Ghoul

A ghoul ceases to be a ghoul if they run out of vitae and go a month without being fed more.

  • Feeding ghouls is almost always implicitly handwaved, same as vampires hunting.
  • If your PC is approaching this state, then you should submit a +request before the month is up, as ICly you would be driven to seek out more vitae.

Possessed

A possessed who survives exorcism becomes whatever they were before becoming possessed. If that's something that wouldn't normally be playable as a PC, then it doesn't remain playable in this situation either.

Kinain

A kinain may become mortal, similar to kithain.

Falling to the Wyrm

While this is not a conversion into another sphere exactly, taking a character that is say Gaian and falling to the Wyrm, or a Mage that becomes a Nephandi is more a storyline thing. But there are some conversions that need done codewise. Be sure to open up a +request with staff when this looks likely to happen, or that you would like to have happen.

Nephandi

  • Type = Infernalist, Malfean, or K'llashaa
    • Non-Nephandi with Faction = Wyrm (e.g. BSD kinfolk) should set a +note to that effect
    • Non-Nephandi infernalists should set Type = Infernalist but Faction = something else, and also set a +note
    • See house rules for context

Paradigm Shifts:

  • Why do you believe the world should be destroyed?
