A demon's Torment is a measure of the anguish and suffering it carries, and how it deals with those painful memories.

Effects of Torment

When performing an evocation (lore), a high-Torment effect occurs:

  • When you declare it ahead of time. (Gain 1 temporary Torment.)
  • When more than half your successes are less than or equal to your permanent Torment. (Just your successes. Ones cancel your highest dice first.)
    • Example: You have permanent Torment 6. You roll vs difficulty 4 and get (1 2 2 3 3 4 6 8 9 10). The 1 cancels the 10, so your successes are (4 6 8 9). Only two of these are less than or equal to 6, so high-Torment does not occur.
Permanent Torment How your apocalyptic form appears to others (N = their Willpower)
N/2 or less Glorious and awe-inspiring
Greater than N Nightmarish and horrifying
In between May be awesome or terrifying, depending on their viewpoint

Gaining Torment

  • If you gain 10 temporary Torment, it's converted to 1 permanent Torment.
  • If your permanent Torment reaches 10, you're no longer playable (your PC is unapproved and becomes an NPC).
Permanent Torment Sins
10 There is no sin. You're already damned. Why not do whatever you want?
9 Casual violation of others: murder for no reason, thoughtless cruelty and torture, near-mindless savagery.
8 Premeditated violation of others: plotted murder or assassination, systematic destruction of another, long-sought revenge.
7 Sins of passion: murder in a fit of rage, giving in to feelings of hate, anger, jealousy or irrational prejudice, encouraging the same in others. Destroying particularly inspirational or meaningful objects. Doing personal harm through addiction or other self-destructive patterns of behavior.
6 Destruction of the works or inflicting intentional emotional harm through cruelty or neglect.
5 Accidental violations: Doing harm to others through carelessness, negligence or thoughtlessness. Neglecting duties or responsibilities. Betraying another's trust.
4 Theft from or deception of others without just cause. Breaking your sworn word.
3 Doing harm (physical, emotional, or spiritual) to a mortal for any reason other than self-defense or the greater good.
2 Doing harm to any mortal creature for any reason other than self-defense or the greater good (a disrespect for the order of Creation). Permitting any lesser sin in your presence without at least trying to prevent it.
1 Any act of cruelty, selfishness or thoughtlessness. Allowing any such act in your presence without trying to prevent it. An unwillingness to sacrifice for the greater good.

When you sin, roll the appropriate virtue vs 8; if you fail, gain 1 temporary Torment.

  • Cannot spend Willpower for an automatic success on virtue rolls
  • Botches just count as failures
Virtue When to roll it
Conscience Satisfy your immediate needs at the expense of your ethics
Conviction Violate your personal beliefs
Courage Act out of fear for your safety at the expense of others

Gain 1 temporary Torment to manifest a high-Torment power of your apocalyptic form.

  • Permanent Torment 7+: For each dot above 6, pick a high-Torment power; you can manifest it without gaining further Torment.

Losing Torment

When you perform a kind, compassionate, and selfless act, make resisted rolls of Torment and the appropriate virtue; if the virtue wins, lose 1 temporary Torment.

  • Cannot spend Willpower for an automatic success on virtue rolls
  • Botches just count as failures
Virtue When to roll it
Conscience Sacrifice or put others ahead of yourself because it's the right thing to do
Conviction Remain true to your beliefs at great cost
Courage Display gallantry and valor for the sake of others

Spend 10 XP to lower your permanent Torment by 1 (to a minimum of 1).
