Mariava published her first novel in 2011. Though targeted at young adult readers, it attracted readers of all ages at all demographics. The story was a classic one, an epic faerie tale about a dark prince and a terrible, sentient darkness. The heroine, the young ruler of a beautiful kingdom, barely won out in the end against those forces and at terrible cost, as her champion perished in mortal combat against enemy forces. It reached high on the New York Times Bestseller List, and received a lot of glowing praise from critics.
