Bigfoot and Other Mysteries: Part 2 (Side A)

“Assassins take no pride in fighting fairly. We take pride in winning.”
- ― Robin Hobb, Fool's Quest

This is considered to be what everyone knows: Other information that had been learned on the previous adventure can be shared by those who discovered it.

(Log: https://www.cityofhopemush.net/index.php/Logs:_Bigfoot_and_Other_Mysteries).

It hadn't been all that long since the little group went scouting out Russ' Vision. Nearby is Eureka and Eris had bought out a couple of Hotel Rooms for a few weeks and had been basing her investigation out of there when she had time.

The Hoopa Reservation is just a few miles out of the area that they'd been drawn too. A barren high peak amidst peaks that sport Redwoods of all sizes. Twice Eris had gone back to scout and both times came out with small amounts of information.

The area that seems to bear the markings, both scent and glyph, of the Uktena is a somewhat irregular oblong area roughly 5 miles across. Eris is confused by the Umbral area for a while until she realizes that they have cast Rite of the Shrouded Glen. Which means this area must be a cearn. (For OOC reasons, it IS but it is -Dormant-. So put your forks and knives away thaumivores.)

There are 5 Packs: Eris has identified the Glyphs of them as the following:

1. Novice Uketna Pack - Untouched Clay

2. Elder Uktena Pack - Binding Chant

3. Bear Pack - Guardian Paw

4. Hummingbird Pack - Swift Spears

5. Turkey Pack - Three Feathers.

She says there are signs of decay in the area, mostly centered around the peak they went towards but no corresponding Wyrm Spirits. She also couldn't get a good read on the umbra but it seemed like the physical area around it in the Umbra has signs of wyrm taint as well. It could just be the immense poverty, high murder rates, Gentrification, Pot farming, and encroaching industry but that doesn't seem to fit with the lack of corresponding banes.

When we arrive back at the meeting point at the Trinity River Russ's head is screaming at him again and anyone with a Wyrm Lore of 3+ is dealing with a low-grade feeling of something scraping against the back of their skull. It is not aggressive, it doesn't seem to be targeted it's just a feeling.

        • IMPORTANT IC NOTE: Beyond your current point ALL WYRM THINGS are at +2 Difficulty to all things. So Average Diff is 8 minus modifiers. I will try to remember, please do so as well****

Russ is in homid form and he has a snarl on his face as he deals with the unending migraine that begins as soon as they get within a few miles of this area. He is wearing a hoodie with the hood turned up, causing his short puckish horns to tent the black material. He also wears a pair of black jeans and his mirrored aviators are hooked onto the collar of his shirt. Attached to the back of his belt is a wicked-looking black leather whip. There is a sackcloth satchel bag that hangs crossways over his chest. "Does anyone have any questions? We're up against several packs and I doubt we have the firepower to take them out with a full-frontal assault."

Pax is here, dressed in some old jeans and a flannel button-up with his smaller black duffle bag slung across his back. Other than this fairly normal appearance that he usually sports, he seems slightly on edge, considering whatever it is must be bothering him too, if to a lesser extent. Wrinkling his nose, Pax states, "I can remove one of them, it'd be a good way to make sure I still know what the fuck I'm doing if we're doing it that way." Sniffing, he tacks on, "If you know any names, even one, I can see about taking care of them. Otherwise, I'll assist wherever I can."

"Sometimes it's not about firepower it's about tactics." Barksdale rumbles. The guy looks like he could be ready for an assault if it came to it. Armored in matte black tactical armor, his rifle over the shoulder and a bandana tied on his head. "If we actually plan on taking them down, speed and stealth will be needed or some means to turn the tied in our favor before they all crash down on us."

Emi drifts in circles on her hoverboard, dressed in courtly attire as she looks like an ebony black fox in Crinos. All her gear looks oriental and made for the East as she growls her best English. <<Divide and conquer?>> , speaking with clawed hands for emphasis. She didn't inspire delirium in her war form since the foxes were not part of the war of rage. Tapping her demonic ninja headband that looked stolen from a Naruto anime. <<Sacrifice tomorrow for today??>>, as the fetish seemed extremely dangerous and held a vile spirit from the Middle Kingdom.

Pembroke pose uses his time between the gathering of info to work on perfecting his shapeshifting and ability to move without attracting too much attention. Whatever it is he uses and seems to have made some progress. Late-night flights as an owl or bat become more regular, or smaller birds during the day. "Yeah, no matter how skilled I get, running face-first into a Trueborn is going to be a dicey situation for me. Like, spicy and dicey. I might buy a moment, but permanent handling will take.. finesse."

Emi gains one Willpower

Stefan feels uneasy and keeps rolling his shoulders as he keeps busy reading over the pile of information he has accumulated. Now dressed totally in black he has his various toys ready to go as he sits and listens to the plans.

Eris is staring up at the shadows of the towering trees that lead off into the expansive forest. She doesn't look entirely happy as she considers the distance and listens to the others as they speak. "You mind want to make sure everyone's on the same page here. Are we looking to just wipe all of these Uktena off the face of the planet tonight?"

The Scout shakes her head to Pax. "No. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to glean much. What was there was left there to be obvious? I don't even know how many members each pack has. Or what the hells going on with the Umbra here. I don't like it... Fishy."

Eztlipoc has voted for you.

Eztlipoc has voted for you.

"I agree." Russ says and he points at Barksdale, looking between the faces gathered and venturing, "Even if each of us takes out a pack that is still going to leave us spread very thin across the area." He takes a breath and winces his eyes shut, "Ugh- maybe-" He rolls a hand through the air and then opens his eyes back up, "Maybe we can just hone in the Bane. They've got something bound here that shouldn't be-" Russ pauses to close his eyes again and let out a pained grunt and growl, "I've heard tales of Uktena who bind powerful Banes into the landscape and feed off of them, I'm afraid that's what we're dealing with here but its been hard to confirm because they have the Umbra hidden in their own Shrouded Glen."

Emi loses one Willpower

Emi loses one Willpower

Emi loses one Willpower

Pax gives a grunt of acknowledgment, bobbing his head as he slings his duffle bag around and starts to remove his clothes without much care. "Show we to the edge of the Shroud. That's fucking important, so we should probably deal with it first," he explains. "I can break it down." Removing his shirt, his pants follow next, then he pulls a new set of black shirts and pants from the duffle bag, which he slips on. What follows are pieces of black riot gear, almost the same as Barksdale's, only with significantly more padding on the interior of the parts. "If we can get the Shroud down, you guys can operate without having fucking spiderwebs in your heads."

Emi steps off her hoverboard, fingers tracing the demonic headband as she mumbles a prayer, only the end can be heard. <<... and Death becomes us.>>, as the extremely yin-aspected fox begins to bulge and grow. Her frame growing four feet taller, as her bottom jaw unhinged and split open like an insect's mandibles - quite frankly large enough to bite a homid or Garou in half. At the same time, tiny sphincters ripped open and spread across her fur, as deathly maggots and wasps poured and streamed from her body in endless cessation. Surrounded by a thick cloud of insects as even some snakes and spiders and occasionally a bat erupted and clawed through her demonic form. Blood and ichor dripping from her skin, Emi was no longer the cute spry fox she was known as. Instead, a noxious cloud that reeked of vomit and death surrounded her like a perfume of miasma. Her black fur slicking sharp like adder scales as the servant of Yin becomes a minor demon embodiment and totem of death. Her sword drawn as mandibles clicked, testing out the monstrosity she had become as muscles rip and to stack upon her dangerous form.

Eris nods. "Sounds like a plan, Pax." She moves over to her Alpha and peers up towards the Theurge and folds her arms with a lift of her brows. "Would you be able to figure out where this Bane is once that's done? Maybe the spirit could take care of one or more of the packs for us?" The Elder, however, keeps her eyes on Russ.

This area is quiet at night. So little light pollution the sky is freckled with stars that shine even as the shadows lengthen and the sun sets below the horizon slowly as the group makes their plans. With this road shut off due to a recent mudslide, there is no danger of being seen on this road. The Umbral scenery is just as seemingly serene save for the strange sensation like someone's sliding nails down a chalkboard but without the sound... Except of course for Russ who continues to deal with the horrible Wyrmish wail. "So Pax is breaking down the lines and I'll be backing Russ up. Stefan and Dr. Pembroke, I need you two to oversee things here. Use Pippen and your Wasp to be our eyes where we aren't and look for any devices in the area that may have spotted us coming and going and take care of it, discreetly. Sebastian, I need you to keep me appraised of what's happening here. We cannot risk being seen in any fashion and if anyone else wants to keep a bead on things you might want to give my Kinfolk permission to telepathically communicate with you. I also have one more bit of Backup on the way and he can keep watch from above."

Like that then does a black spot begin to move off of Eris' form, from under cloth, armor, hair, or packs. It won't matter, the details, for the little hooks of the bat's claws pull it free from the depths of her person. Awoken. Awakened. Ready, even, the shape leaps off of her person into the night air to flap around and as it does so does that little thing, tear itself apart, blackness, crimson, ribbons, and ripped cloth? The fabric of the Stuff the monster is made of expanding, growing, gnashing, thrusting down into the earth beside the White One to rebuild into that tall Nahuatl 'man'. With fangs poking from his lips, and two red dots where pupils should be, and the grim-faced creature dressed only in that black wool coat with the black bear fur spread across his shoulders. The head sat upon the right. There, at the side of his body, clawed fingertips wriggle and twitch as the form truly settles and his 'greeting' is that of clicking, clacking, biting teeth. The eyes look slowly around at those gathered, then to the environment, the tall trees. Up, up, up at the top of trees, and from Eztlipoc's throat comes a cacophony of hisses and 'chittering' before growing quiet again.

"I'm best at a distance, but I can move in as well. Act as overwatch and snipe targets of opportunity? Or act as a ranged defense?" the First Team Commander looks to Russ, actually deferring to the other Spiral on this.

Stefan nods his head to Eris, "Sure thing." He takes Pippin from his pocket, concentrates and links with him as he activates the camera, and then places him on the floor.

Russ looks around at everyone gathered and he lets out an annoyed sounding exhale (probably from the migraine) "Alright, everyone..." with an especially long look shot toward Emi. "We're heading to the edge of this Shroud, some of you sharp-eyed types should probably keep an eye on our backs." The arrival of the batman gets a little jump out of Russ as if he wasn't expecting it, his hand goes to the whip as his back but he doesn't pull it free as he un-tenses when he realizes its just the bat. "Yes, ranged defense."

Finishing up with his armor, Pax reaches into the bag again, removing a large, black and white mask that he slips on his head. Following this, a silvery looking wand is removed and slid into a holster on the bottom of his forearm. Looking up as the bat-man makes himself known, Pax's eyes begin to slowly turn reddish-yellow behind that mask, and looking back down, he seems to think for a moment. After a decision is apparently made, he reaches into the bag once more, removing a large, tremendously new looking silver Warhammer larger than the bag itself, which he slings over his shoulder as the bag is zipped up and slung back securely across his back. "All set."

Eris stares at Eztl for a long moment. She almost looks like she might just bite him out of spite but she sniffs rather and shifts her weight a bit, chewing the inside of her cheek as she thinks. She murmurs to the man who had just changed from a Bat, "I need you to keep watch above here and in the spirit world, Eztlipoc." This area is huge and it's getting darker by the minute. Not that it should bother the Wyrm-creatures much. Eris then looks around and then quickly shifts to Hispo, borrowing from her Spiritual Familiar who's hidden on her person.

Silver Dire-Wolf rolls Stamina(8) + Survival(5) (13 dice) vs 6 for 5 successes.

Russ rolls Stamina + Survival vs 6 for 0 successes.

Russ loses one Magical Essence

Pembroke strips himself down, shines up his ring, and takes does a line of.. something.. from one of the bottles. His body doesn't go through the massive and bizarre changes of the various Spirals and chosen followers of the Father. His, much more sedate. His body squeezing and seeming to turn inside out.p, with a pop and a few stray feathers, a spotted Owl is parked on the floor.

Eztlipoc's bare feet wiggle into the soil when present, and his nose lifts to the air to sniff - teeth clicking in response to subtle scents lost, and gained. His head turns to Eris when she speaks, and there is that wide, wide grin before a bite of teeth at the air is given. Looking up into the branches, "I cannot See here. But, I will watch. You said word...Uk-Tena? I know this word, People." Hee. The creature wriggles some, terribly, happily, another bout of hissing as the man's form bursts into those shreds of 'cloth' to lift up into the air and reform as a large black bat, flying into the air and then perching upside down on a branch. Red eyes glinting in whatever light they find.

The demonic beast of Death lumbers after Russ to not be seen as was still incredibly stealthy for her size. She nods to the rite master, her transformation wasn't for fun or to spoil the stealth. Merely it took time to activate and would not be a good thing to do in the middle of battle. Vile drool dripped from her devastating mandibles as she eyes him. <<Protect>>, is all she was able to chitter out while pointing to Eris and the rest of the group. Sniffing the air and watching the spirits from both realms.

Pax rolls Arete vs 5 for 3 successes.

Russ' horns grow in despite the fact that he retains a homid form and the large fully grown spirals take on a monstrous green-plated quality with pointed barbs and he nods to Emi's words. "I assume we'll be sidestepping to break the Shroud." He looks Pax though, still very curious about how un-doing a ritual actually works.

Pembroke gives his wings a couple of experimental flaps snd gains some altitude where he can peruse the group from the air, keeping his sharp eyes open.

Rifle brought to the ready, Barksdale lets his gaze focus down the thermal scope and just look around as they wait, scouting out whatever he may see.

Stefan moves out of the way and watches the others as they prepare to leave. Pippin scurries around near Eris' feet, ready to go with them.

Silver Dire-Wolf rolls 1 (1 dice) vs 6 for 1 successes.

The group splits leaving the Kinfolk to ensure that the Spirals will not be discovered by the outside world while they sneak through the tall trees, over a slope towards the high hill in the distance. Eris pads alongside Russ, head down and flanking him and moving with the other Spirals.

Back where Pembroke and Stefan, so far, things are quiet. There's not a whole lot to see though down the street where the road is closed there is that little town area. It's thus far eerily quiet save for the distant sounds of animals where the cumulative rage isn't disturbing them.

Russ rolls Perception + Awareness vs 8 for 0 successes.

Silver Dire-Wolf rolls Perception(5) + Awareness(4) (9 dice) vs 6 for 2 successes.

Pembroke rolls Perception + Awareness vs 6 for 3 successes.

Barksdale rolls Perception + Awareness vs 6 for 0 successes.

Pax reaches up, reasting his gloved hand over the eyeholes of his mask, then removes them as bluish hue tinks the otherwise fiery colors therein. "There... That's the Spirit Cage," he tells Russ, as he points towards a hill in the distance. "There's other shit here too, but y'know, I'll focus on the Shroud. My magic is fuckin difficult right now though, so I'd really appreciate it if someone would drag me across the Gauntlet so I don't have to expend too much damn energy." This is said as he turns his masked face towards Russ, apparently expecting the higher-ranked Theurge to be better able to handle it.

"Yeah." Russ says with a blase shrug, "Sure." He grabs Pax by the shoulder and just sort of jostles him through the gauntlet with a little shove. The Elder Theurge steps through mere seconds behind him and he starts to shift into a Crinos form once they are in the Umbra. His body elongating and getting covered in a reddish fur.

The vampire that watches from above, remains. Watching each monster-blooded fiend to 'blip' out of existence, while his red eyes turn towards that hill. Not a bat at all seen in this world, large ears twitch, ghost-white markings like slashes across black pelt. Blending into the moonlit branches. A maw full of sharp, terrible teeth.

Pax rolls Intelligence + Occult vs 5 for 13 successes.

Ripping a hole in the Umbra, Emi glides right on through. Her hunched back arched as the depraved monster slithered into the realm of monsters. All manner of creepy crawlers continues to erupt from her body, as the umbra swallows the fox up. The rotting smell of death disappears with her.

As Pax is pushed beyond the Gauntlet by Russ, he falls forward into a roll, coming up on his knee once he's on the other side. The Warhammer resting over one of his shoulders, his other hand reaches for the wand from its holster. The silvery tip glistens briefly, and after running his thumb across one of the rings attached to the base, a silver one, he directs the thing towards the ground in front of him. With a twist of the wrist and a sharp tug of the tip of the wand, a silvery jet of light shoots out, which impacts the ground and begins to spread out from the source as the power of the Rite of the Shrouded Glen is suddenly drained of the vast majority of its power.

In the Umbra the silver direwolf and Metis have Batwings making the Ritemaster, with his spiritual heritage, look downright disturbing. Eris just looks like some little goth girls super rad dream, a white fuzzy wolf with white batwings and pretty cat eyes! Woof<3! The silvery dire wolf sniffs the ground as they slip into the Umbra. It's weird because it's like they're walking but the peak never quite seems closer. At least.. for a little while anyway.

Then like a television on the fritz things seem to bungee a few times before they snap back into perspective and they can all see that they're near the bottom of the ridge leading up towards the peak...

Anyone 'Scouting', I.E. keeping an eye on things: Stefan, Eztl, etc. Please give me one relevant roll. (Alertness, investigation, awareness, primal urge, etc..)

People going /into/ the area please give me a Dex+Stealth Roll and one Perception+Alertness.

Remember your +2 diff before Mods...

Eztlipoc rolls Perception + Hunting vs 6 for 4 successes.

Russ rolls Dexterity vs 9 for 1 successes.

Russ rolls 1 vs 8 for 0 successes.

Barksdale rolls Perception + Alertness vs 8 for 1 successes.

Russ rolls Perception + Alertness vs 8 for 0 successes.

Emi rolls Dexterity + 2 + Stealth vs 6 for 6 successes.

Pax rolls Dexterity + Stealth vs 2 for 9 successes.

Pax rolls Perception + Alertness vs 8 for 0 successes.

Pax rolls Willpower vs 8 for 4 successes.

Emi rolls Perception + Alertness vs 8 for 2 successes.

Silver Dire-Wolf rolls Dexterity(8) + Stealth(6) (14 dice) vs 4 for 12 successes.

Stefan rolls Perception + Alertness vs 6 for 3 successes.

Silver Dire-Wolf rolls Perception(5) + Alertness(5) (10 dice) vs 8 for 0 successes.

Pembroke rolls Dexterity + Stealth vs 8 for 3 successes.

Silver Dire-Wolf rolls 19 (19 dice) vs 6 for 5 successes.

Barksdale rolls Dexterity + Stealth vs 8 for 1 successes.

Pembroke rolls Perception + Alertness vs 6 for 3 successes.

Pembroke floats around, banks and curves. Any of the crew that remain on this side of the Gauntlet get a ping, and a telepathic image of the land from an overhead view or their relative positions, and a special notation of a batch of odd shadows that don't seem to match the surroundings.

Stefan concentrates and sends a message to Pembroke <You need to swing around and check out a car that's parked down the road that wasn't there when everyone left.>

In his Crinos form, the narrow-shouldered Ritemaster wears limited tribal clothing of a unique, rustic design. The style showcases his many scars which even in Crinos can be seen peeking through his pelt. <<We've got odd shadows, back where we left the Kinfolk.>> Russ reports to Pax or anyone else that is close enough in the Umbra to understand his speech. The snout of his maw is up to expose the teeth and its a very canine expression of discomfort, every so often he laps at his teeth like he wants to bite something- but you can't bite a headache.

Pax rolls Intelligence + Occult vs 5 for 12 successes.

Pembroke banks over to fly closer to the road, trying to get a better look at the car and it's occupant and forwards the message about the car to Etzi. He tries to keep messages short and sweet.

This is perhaps the first time anything has managed to hole up for more than a few seconds against the wand, and it causes a snort from within Pax's mask. It's not much longer however, only a few seconds after than the silvery light snaps back into the wand itself, and the entire world around those within the Umbra snaps into focus suddenly. "Then go back across and keep them safe," Pax says back to Russ, as he stands back to his two feet and looks up at the ridge before him. "I'll go ahead and break the Rites on the Spirit Cage. When that happens, the Caern will probably reawaken, and I imagine some nasty shit will escape."

Eris's nostrils flare and she growls to Russ. She presses her head into the Ritemaster's side before turning the direction of her Kinfolk and darting off that direction at full speed.

IT leaves Russ with Emi, Pax, and Barksdale to cover his ass and the Bat to circle from above. (You can all roll a new Perception+Alertness, diffs are now only +1. Remember to kiss your Nephandi)

Eztlipoc rolls Perception + Hunting vs 5 for 6 successes.

Pax rolls Perception + Alertness vs 7 for 4 successes.

Pembroke rolls Perception + Alertness vs 6 for 4 successes.

The death that consumes draws her katana, the twin bladed sword quite epic and large in her hands. Mandibles chattering, <Trees> and bracing to protect Pax and Russ - even though the two of them probably didn't need it. <Danger>, yeah her smooth elegant talking was likely to win her a Wyrmy Award, blistering the ears of those who listened.

Pembroke hoooooooots. And sends Stefan an image of 5 people around him, a message repeated to everyone fast as he wings it in his direction

Leather wings, and red eyes. The Death Bat moves through the trees, dipping, ducking, diving. Watching. From above in the trees, Eztlipoc sends out that vibrating pulse that is felt in the bones - << Six, Six. Three to the Face, Two to the Arms! Six, Six! Three Horned Ghosts, Five Living Trees! Two Uk-Ten-Ah! Six, Six! >> The shrieking, rasping, a cacophony of voices that is Eztlipoc's mental voice rides through Pax as his red eyes part the veil, and those senses expand, hunting his enemies. Scenting their -blood- and lack of.

Barksdale rolls Perception + Alertness vs 7 for 3 successes.

Emi rolls Perception + Alertness vs 7 for -1 successes.

The Ritemaster snarls quietly and the horned Crinos beast with large bat wings pauses alongside Emi at the mention of Danger, repeating what the Bat was screeching on the other side of the Gauntlet. <<At least ten spirits in the distance, big ones... I can try to distract them for you while you work on the Spirit Cage.>>

Pax rolls Intelligence + Occult vs 4 for 11 successes.

For Barksdale part of his defense is not being seen at all, strike from concealment. He turns towards where he hears the sounds and readies his rifle as he backs towards the shadows to conceal himself.

Pax rolls Intelligence + Occult vs 4 for 10 successes.

Pax continues forward, the wand shifting as he shoots a strand of silvery light at the air between himself and Russ, the tether itself dissolving. "In case you need to go back. Magi are stronger in the Umbra." is explained as he looks back forward and nods. "But yea, lot of shit around here. I should only need a moment, but I can operate this thing and fight if necessary." Pax explains, as he points the wand in the direction of the 'Spirit Cage' and let's form another stream of silvery light, which seems to impact a barrier that starts to slowly drain away as well.

As the battle begins to fire up around him, Pax continues to move forward, his wand held up in his right hand and that large silver Warhammer held down at his side in a defensive posture in his left. Behind the mask, those yellowish-red eyes continue to burn brightly and as the silvery chord of energy continues to batter down the Spirit Cage at the top of the ridge, the wand itself seems to glow brighter, the energy being absorbed and dissipated becoming more intense the longer the effect is held. "Third of the way through!" he calls to the others if they can even hear him through the chaos.

The Shroud fell before the battle began and the spiritual energy of the space started to attune itself to the battle brewing. When the battlefield erupts into chaos AnguDa'Staagra rears back his horned head and howls to the Umbral heavens. The Wyrmish warble carries a message to any Banes in the area, <<Come and fight, reap the rewards of service..>> He spins in a circle and gracefully twirls past one of the Uktena who swoops in and try to attack. His laughter is a chuffing bark that mounts into another tainted howl as his hooves clop sharply against the ground beating out a war rhythm. <<Fight for me and be reborn in his eyes!>> Russ charges through the battlefield ramping up the spirits and howling out a warning in a Wyrmish tongue.
