"There is no better high than discovery."
- E. O. Wilson
Although she doesn't look old enough to be doing so, Juliette Keyes works for Lehr & Associates, a consulting firm heavily involved with government and military contracts. When the government can't, or won't, hire someone themselves -- which happens all the time -- Lehr is one of the short list of nationwide consulting firms that they reach out to to handle whatever the problem is. After all, it's easier to dismiss a contractor than to fire a permanent employee, and especially so when the employer is Uncle Sam.
Juliette doesn't have a lot to say about the details of her work -- she's probably signed a stack of confidentiality agreements about six inches high -- but she describes herself as an "aerospace engineer", and she's the sort of bright young woman with occasional social awkwardness issues for whom that job description is remotely plausible. For all her regular grumbling about the people she works with, she certainly seems dedicated; indeed, she's been heard to say that she has the best job in the world. And she wasn't being obviously sarcastic.

- Awkwardness: Juliette is, to put it nicely, inadequately socialized. She doesn't have a good sense of when things are appropriate to say and when they aren't, and she doesn't consider it rude to just look over your shoulder and ask what you're doing. Which ... could be good or bad.
- Computer Nerdery: Although she's not really the computer scientist of the family (that's her sister Lucy), she's still very gifted by the standards of any normal person. And she has strong ideas about freedom of information -- which is to say, if she needs information, she has no qualms about going and getting it, whether she's "supposed" to have it or not.
- Family: Juliette has five sisters and one half-sister, all of whom are exceptional engineers or scientists of some variety in their own right. If you're heavily involved in one of their specialties, you may know of or perhaps have met one of them. The family includes Lucy (computer science), Marie (pure mathematics), Aurelia (electrical engineering), Kyra (biology), Emily (chemistry), and their half-sister Allie (human psychology).
- Fixing Things: Most of her job is on the design side rather than the construction side. But sometimes the only way to test your ideas is to build something yourself, so when necessary, she can build a autonomous dune rover out of spare parts, or repair anything from a refrigerator to a 747.
- Smart People: If you're exceptionally bright and she picks up on it, she'll be very interested in you, and may try to convince you to consider employment with Lehr & Associates if you show even the slightest interest.
- Space!: One of the few things Juliette is really passionate about is space exploration. Are you interested in the Final Frontier? She's up to date on all the latest news from NASA and around the world.

there's a starman waiting in the sky
he'd like to come and meet us
but he thinks he'd blow our minds
there's a starman waiting in the sky
he's told us not to blow it
'cause he knows it's all worthwhile
- David Bowie, Starman
Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
See the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
The sky was made for us tonight
- Iggy Pop, The Passenger
I can't trust anyone or anything these days
If you are who you say you are then show your face
Came out of the ocean like you came out of a dream
Your voice it sounds familiar but you are not what you seem
All words of comfort cannot take away my doubt
I've decided if it kills me I'll find out what you're about
I can't trust anyone or anything these days
- Lord Huron, The Stranger
She's got a map of the world
Pinned up on her wall
It's such a beautiful world
Glistening and magical
She's got a map of the world
Shining away in her mind
Colouring-in her life
This is the day she walks
She's gonna see it all
- Marillion, Map of the World
Four, three, two, one
Earth below us, drifting, falling
Floating weightless, calling, calling home
- Shiny Toy Guns, Major Tom
The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town
You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere
- U2, Beautiful Day
