An Ornithological Mystery
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Prospect, CA) -- Could a previously unknown species of raptor have been hiding in one of California's most densely populated areas?

It sounds implausible, to say the least. "Like science fiction," according to Robert Corrigan, ornithologist at the University of California's Avram and Ruth Goldman Ecological Research Center in Prospect. Yet a few stubborn birdwatchers in the greater metropolitan area insist that it's true, and that they've seen something they can't find in any guidebook. Roberta Miller, 52, a high school science teacher, is typical of the believers.

"I was out by the coast one morning a few weeks ago," says Ms. Miller, a tall woman whose severe manner and style of dress do little to suggest someone given to idle flights of fancy. "I was hoping to see one of the pair of eagles I spotted there last summer. I didn't see either of them, but what I did see was a bird about the same size, but with this incredibly vivid orange and yellow and red plumage. At first I thought it was just some sort of effect of the sunrise, but it perched in one of the sycamores at the top of the cliff and I got a better look at it. And it was ..." She pauses, taking a sip of coffee, and searches for the right word. In the end, though, all she can come up with is, "Incredible."

Other local birders have corroborated her story. The descriptions are remarkably consistent: eagle-sized, and with the claws and talons of a bird of prey, but with brilliantly vivid feathers, a long twin-forked tail, and a striking feathered crest. Rashid Kaif, 36, a computer programmer with Black Ridge Capital, even has what he claims is a photograph of the mysterious creature -- though the image is too small and blurry to constitute definitive proof.

But the descriptions don't match any known species, and Corrigan, who has studied raptors for nearly sixteen years after completing his PhD in Ecology, says flatly, "Birds of prey don't have that type of coloration. They're predators, and for predators, vivid coloring is evolutionary disadvantageous." He suggests that perhaps the birders have misidentified an unusually large specimen of a similarly colored bird -- a northern cardinal, perhaps. "Prospect is well west of its usual range," he admits, "but that's far more likely than it being a new species entirely. For a species this large and eye-catching to go unknown for so long in Southern California is ... To call it a billion to one shot would be overstating the likelihood."

Yet the birders stand their ground. "I know what a cardinal looks like," Ms. Miller scoffs. "There is no chance that what I saw was a cardinal. Zero. None." Mr. Kaif, and a half-dozen others contacted for this story, were similarly firm. Donald Garrett, at 72 a retired veteran of the Iraq War, speculates that it might be a unique individual of a species usually colored more drably. "Like a white crocodile. But I don't think that's very likely," he says. "Physically it's distinct from every other large raptor I can think of, even if you set the coloration aside entirely."

The truth remains in doubt. And while Dr. Corrigan says the Goldman Center has no plans to launch a search for the bird on its own, "if someone has a photograph or a verifiable sighting, we'd be first in line to see that." He smiles, and for just a moment, his eyes have a faraway look to them. "Who wouldn't want to? It'd be the find of a lifetime." -- Karen Capelli for the Prospect News Herald.

Golden Sunset Gallery grand openin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prospect Union-Tribue article in the society pages.
(Let's assume this is a summary of an article by a witty, snarky someone with Expression 5.)

The opening of the Golden Sunset Gallery on Saturday the Fifth started off 2019 for Prospect society with a bang. It was quite a who's who of Prospect from the mayor, Kameron Falcon, to celebrities like actor/comedian Pauly Shore and YouTuber Tabby Garret, and many of the city's business elite such as Agnes Blum. If you didn't catch the manager, Gordon Reeves, promoting the opening in December you're sure to see more of him in the future.

Opening with a religious theme, Golden Sunset Gallery pulled in a traveling exhibit of the artwork of the Sistine Chapel. Quite an impressive exhibit, allowing people to see the famous master's work up close. Catching an exhibit like that to open is a feat itself.

The night's event focused on a charity silent auction of classic Christian artwork. Most prominent would be Virgin and Child, the painting by Peter Van Lint from the 17th century. One of four exquisite pieces donated by Daphnne Cunningham, founder of Golden Sunset and CEO of Cunningham Enterprises, another name we're sure to hear more of. A surprise hit of the auction was a beautiful Edwardian rosary necklace donated by the On Wings of Angels Foundation. All told the auction resulted in $525,000 with another $20,000 in donations for several church charities in Prospect; food banks, women's and family and homeless shelters.

Perhaps some credit for the generosity were the performances during the auction. A solo ballet dance by Madeline Blanchard lead into Ave Maria and Dona Nobis Pacem sung by the likes of Katharina von Starhemberg and Doctor Jolene Addison behind On Wings of Angels. A night of the arts inspired by faith to stir the heart. A night sure to be remembered for some time to come.

And if you were not on the opening night's guest list, the Sistine Chapel exhibit is still on display through March. Golden Sunset is particularly encouraging schools to send a field trip. Whether you're stirred by the faith or not, full scale reproductions of Michelangelo's masterpieces seen up close are quite a sight to understand skill, beauty, and history.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

News spreads through wealthy circles as well as the local news. It seems that an imperial collection Faberge egg is being showcased in Prospect for a limited time only as it makes it way to be sold for auction. It's a beautiful jewel encrusted egg and it's estimated worth is said to be in the millions as even the usual signs of crafting can't be found. It's truly a perfect specimen. It will be showing at <insert location here for a limited time...>

OOC: This is a plot hook. Bygone characters will IMMEDIATELY notice this is an egg of what was thought to be an extinct bygone species. People with sufficient bygone lore (3+) can roll int+bygone lore to Sae at diff 6 to see if they know. Otherwise, you need occult 4+ (int+occult at diff 7) to recognize as such. It is the week of the Festival of Mardi Gras in New Orleans! In celebration of such each night Bourbon and Bedlam will be celebrating a different Krewe of the day all through the week. Special drinks will be available along with special food choices from Vieux Carre (slices of authentic King Cake or entire cakes available for sale). Those who do not arrive in costume can still get beads and masks at the door.

The upcoming week will see Krewe afterparties, so watch for the announcements. During the evenings, throws will be given out from that day's Krewe to those who are enjoying the festivities.

(OOC: +events will be posted, but IC live bands and other activities will be occurring all week at the lounge. RP accordingly and enjoy yourselves!)

Carnival in Prospect
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One article that pops up in the Union-Tribune's Things To Do part of their Entertainment section.

Sounds like Mardi Gras merrymaking in the Gaslamp Quarter

The good times are getting rolling in Prospect. Saturday everyone 21 and up can take the Big Easy Bites and Booze tasting tour through 20 particpating bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter collecting beads at each.

If you're really into the spirit of Carnival then check out Bourbon and Bedlam which is going all out with a krewe themed night, and authentic King Cake from Vieux Carre, all the way through to a big Mardi Gras bash Tuesday. A few blocks down Comet in the Arts Disctrict another New Orleans themed club, Royal Cajun Cabaret, is keeping their stage busy with Carnival dance troupes and burlesque shows.

For those of you into a bit of gossip, there's some rumors of the Cabaret scouting out some locations in Carlsbad. Whether that means this is an expansion for new party opportunities in Carlsbad, or a last chance for a cabaret show here in Prospect is still a matter of speculation as Cabaret management has declined comment on the grounds of being too busy with Carnival.

Mother doing karate while son stri
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Police got quite the kick out of a mother and son wreaking havoc inside a Prospect Walmart with their dog.

Officers with Prospect Police Department responded to reports of a theft in progress at the shopping center around 8:30 pm, where they found 46-year-old Lisa Smith “screaming in the entryway" and chasing after her loose canine, authorities said in a statement.

Shoppers and Walmart employees told responding officers the dog, Bo, was not wearing a leash when Smith arrived and started running up to customers while his owner “erratically started pulling apart store displays and placing them in her cart.”

Smith was asked to leave the store, but continued to cause trouble in the parking lot, where she performed a series of karate moves. Bo meanwhile, attempted to escape the Walmart with a stolen treat — a box of Jiffy Cornbread Muffin mix.

Her 25-year-old son, identified by officers as Benny Vann, was also “in the store causing problems,” police said. He made his way to the back of the Walmart and stripped down, exposing himself to other customers.

Vann grabbed some clothing items off a nearby rack and tried to make a run for it. At one point he attempted to run down an officer with his scooter.

Responding police “physically” stopped the scooter and Vann was arrested for lewd and lascivious behavior, disorderly conduct and retail theft.

His mother was also taken into custody, but not before she attempted to kick out the window of a squad car. Smith is facing charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and misdemeanor bail jumping.

The ONLY THING that was found interesting on their persons otherwise was a few bags of Dove chocolates that were finished in their vehicle and were being consumed while on premises.

OOC Note: OBVIOUSLY RELATED TO CURSED CHOCOLATE PLOT THREAD. Send inquiries to Jasmine.

Two Dead at Los Angeles horse show
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nation-wide horse racing is under scrutiny due to recent animal casualties, but the California equestrian circuit has just announced its first human deaths, both of which are pending investigation.
Lee Dalton, 21, owner operator of Greyhawk Ranch in Prospect, was declared dead on the scene by paramedics while at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, having attended the 2019 Hollywood Charity Horse Show held Memorial Day Weekend. Regina George, 18, also on the scene was transported to Dignity Health Los Angeles with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, however was declared dead on arrival. Authorities have released speculation that George had entered the show grounds with a firearm, shot Dalton and then turned the firearm on herself.
HCHS and the LAEC have expressed their condolences to the victim’s families, and their mutual reassurances for improved security at all future equestrian events throughout the season. Currently complying with the LAPD’s investigation, both organizations have since contributed to a charity fund outside that of the show, intended as relief for the affected Greyhawk Ranch. Investigators have asked anyone with any information to come forward.
A statement from Greyhawk Ranch is as follows. “We are saddened beyond belief at this tragedy. The ranch has been family-owned for generations, and Lee was like family to all of us here. The welfare of our ranch hands and instructors is paramount, along with that of our riders, so operations will be shut down while we take time to grieve and keep the remainder of our family safe,” provided by Joseph Sani, lead ranch hand, stated as having worked for the family-run company for 30 years. All private lessons and after-school classes for Greyhawk Ranch are temporarily suspended, until provided further results from the police investigation.

Celebrity Death
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight, we would like to anounce the passing of a standing figure in the community. Ian Brandon Jenkins, 32, well-renowned horror author and husband, died from breathing in toxic fumes on 07/29/2019 inside of a burning building. He had been cooking at a community food drive and BBQ sponsored by the local Methodist church in a low-income part of Prospect, when witnesses spotted white smoke. The house that had caught on fire was abandoned due to previously being used as a meth cooking lab, and hadn't had any luck in being sold to prospective buyers. Apparently, someone had broken into the house and set a speaker with a battery as a prank, the recording of a small child calling for help could be heard by the alarmed crowd.

Mr. Jenkins, who is a well-known philanthropist and humanitarian, didn't wait for the fire department to arrive before he barged his way inside to rescue the supposed child in danger. Investigators had discovered that the insides were doused with gasoline as an accelerant, and the culprit had managed to ignite the fire before escaping the soon to be burning building. Police are still looking into this incident. Mr. Jenkins will be dearly missed.

Our lawsuit seeks to prevent an illegal plan to raise Shasta Dam that would flood the protected McCloud River and Tribal Lands. Our lawsuit claims the Fresno-based Westlands Water District is unlawfully cooperating with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to raise the dam. The dam raise would destroy the sacred lands of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe which already lost 90 of its historic lands when the dam was first built in the 1940s. The multibillion-dollar project would also harm trout and endangered Chinook salmon along with other rare plants and wildlife. Details on the proposed project and litigation are available on our website at www.friendsoftheriver.org. 4ocean Surfing Competition Results

PROSPECT, CA - 4ocean.com held one of the final amateur surfing competitions of the summer. Many locals and surf enthusiasts attended and participated in the competition. Proceeds from the event goes towards funding efforts to remove plastics from the ocean as well as other efforts to protect the ocean from harm.

"For every dollar that we collect, we remove a pound of plastic from the ocean. It's really good to see that many residents of Prospect came out today in order to keep our oceans clean," says Judy Edwards, the regional representative of 4ocean.

Daisy Parker, a native Californian, won the competition by nailing a 360 aerial during her run. Parker states, "The ocean vibes were righteous. I was grooving with the wave. It was totally awesome."

According to flyers seen at the event, Parker is a surf coach and makes herself available for private one on one lessons.

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA -- Wildcoast, an international non-profit environmental organization that conserve coastal and marine ecosystem and wildlife, held its annual ocean festival and surf competition today. The fair skies and onshore winds provided decent swells for the competitors.

This year's ocean festival drew large crowds, raising nearly $5000 in donations towards ocean clean-up projects up and down the California / Baja California coast.

Beth Hamill, 25, pulled off the win by performing a tremendous rodeo flip on her final run. Hamill, an Hawaiian native, set the bar high, making it nearly impossible for the other competitors to even come close. "The waves were just gnarly. I was so stoked when I landed the rodeo," said Hamill.

Hamill has dedicated this year's surfing tour to her brother, who was killed by a tiger shark while surfing on a family vacation. Lana Branch, who finished third in the competition, was there with Hamill and has been supportive of her friend.

Not all were impressed with Hamill's run. Malia Oh, a competitor that suffered a massive wipeout when the nose of her board clipped the lip of the wave while attempting to complete her own aerial trick, filed a complaint hinting that Hamill cheated. Emotions ran high throughout the entire competition. When asked for comment, Oh family members turned reporters away.

California native, Daisy Parker managed to squeak out a second place finish over Branch when she hit her 360 aerial. Parker, an ambassador surfing coach of the Wave Project, had her own cheering section as many children who partake in the surfing therapy were on-hand to cheer the local surfer.

Base Jumping from Black Ridge
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following news story appears on various local media outlets:

There was some excitement in Downtown Prospect in early morning of Saturday October 12th. Thrill seeker Serena Cartwright, the only daughter of the Manhattan banking investors Samuel and Candice Cartwright, decided to climb the exterior of the Black Ridge building, the second tallest building downtown. She started the ascent in the early morning darkness, but was noticed by some of the cleaning staff working in one of the offices. Authorities were called to the scene, and rode the elevator up to the top of the building to apprehend Miss Cartwright for illegal trespass.

Their attempts were temporarily foiled, however, as Miss Cartwright leapt off the edge of the building, only to deploy a parachute and glide to the streets below.

She landed amongst an excited onlookers, reporters and police officers. When asked why she pulled the stunt, she laughed out a response, "Because it was exciting as hell!" as she was being placed inside a patrol vehicle.

She was detained and charge with several misdemeanor crimes, but released on her own recognizance a few hours later. "Miss Cartwright apologizes for her behavior," her personal lawyer said in a short statement. "She didn't mean to cause a scene and we'll work with authorities and building owners to put matters right. Serena is a very experienced climber, base jumper and sky diver, and we strongly discourage other people from performing these stunts on their own." There have been no comments from Miss Cartwright directly.

OOC: Plenty of news footage and social media coverage can be found of the stunt.

Local surfer, Daisy Parker, was attacked by a tiger shark during a surfing photo shoot in waters off Tikehau, French Polynesia.

Parker was bumped from underneath by the ocean predator in between video and photo sessions with the start-up surfing / sportswear company, Protest. Parker was thrown from her board during the incident. Due to the quick actions of the camera crew, Parker only suffered lascerations to her thigh.

"Dude, it felt like I got hit by a bus," explains the surfer. The owner of Zimzala Surf Bin goes on to show the bite mark scar upon her thigh, "Almost made me a tasty treat. But the crew arrived just in the nick of time."

When asked whether or not she'll return to surfing, Parker said, "Dude, we're playing in their playground, but the next wave is out there, just calling me."

Spokesperson from Firetrace Fire S
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As reports of a faulty fire suppression system continue to air, Melonie Anderson - a spokesperson for Firetrace Fire Suppression International - has issued this statement, "We, at Firetrace, take our product very seriously and wish to get to the bottom of what transpired at De Rossi Restoration. Our team of system experts and analysts will be conducting diagnostics to verify these claims that it was our system that was faulty, or if there were other extenuating circumstances that lead to the fire."
On December 27th, a fire was reported at De Rossi Restoration. The fire was contained to just the one building structure, much to the fast acting response by the fire responders and the fire fighters of Prospect. Allegedly, the fire suppression system is to blame, citing a faulty system.
When this reporter tried to reach Anderson for further comment, she was swarmed by a team of lawyers and left the press conference.
