ONCE UPON A TIME

...there was a girl of proud bloodlines whose hand was promised to an old warrior. The deal was sealed with a drink from an ancient chalice.

The girl was shy, and loyal, and wished to do her duty to her family. Upon the day she was to be married, however, she vanished. In her place, a cloud of butterflies appeared.

Those who followed this marvel came to a mountain peak where the girl lay encircled by flames as tall and deep as a house. The man to whom she was betrothed could not bring himself to walk into the fire.

...It was a harpy who chose to interfere. Realizing that the girl would be imprisoned so long as the bargain still stood, she challenged the warrior to combat. He was a skilled fighter but she seized him in her claws and threw him down.

The girl was brought safely back to where she had come from. She tried to return to her family but because they believed she had run away, they would not take her back.

She found people she thought were her friends, but, one by one, they betrayed her. In her grief, she lost her ability to speak. Her appearance changed to a strange yarn poppet, with buttons for eyes, and an eternally smiling sewn-on mouth.

A wise angel came to stand guard over her. He taught her many skills. He told her that she had the heart of a hero. She became a stage performer, performing daring acts before the eyes of an audience.

She also lived a second life of defending the weak, freeing the unjustly imprisoned, and easing the suffering of the poor.
