If you've got New Jersey/New York-area organized crime contacts, one of them might've let you know to keep an eye out for "Jack Welkin's kid"; rumor has it she moved here recently. Jack Welkin was an extremely successful 'entrepreneur' with his 'import/export' business, especially since he was willing to work with anyone for the right price. Remaining independent made him some enemies, but not limiting himself was extremely lucrative. Unfortunately, someone's patience finally wore thin when he did business with their competition, and a message was delivered when Amalia was nearly killed in a suspicious car crash; her mom wasn't so lucky. The hit had the opposite effect on Jack from what was intended: instead of backing down, his rage led him to be even less cautious with his associations, and two years later he got the message loud and clear when he finally got a bullet himself.

Despite his attempts to shelter her, Amalia wasn't entirely clueless about her dad's source of wealth, and after he was killed she knew exactly what she had to do: consolidate what she could and get the hell out of town. Her father's death created a bit of a vacuum -- he did provide a valuable service, after all -- and as one group took retribution against his killers, and their allies took retribution against them, and so on... she got in touch with various 'uncles' who helped her minimize herself as a target. She divested herself of most of her inheritance, redistributed the wealth amongst her father's allies and various legitimate interests, and booked a one-way flight to the opposite end of the country. So far she's continued to lay low, and nobody knows if she's going to stay that way, or if she's going to start putting those skills to use at some point.
