What is a Den Realm?

Den Realms (or Umbral Glade to the Gurahl) is a pocket of the Umbra that the Bastet (or Gurahl) would call her own. It is attuned to the shapeshifter spiritually, though several partners may share the same glade. Any one shapeshifter can only be attached to one Den Realm at a time.

The Den Realm is found between the Umbra and physical reality, a burrow between both worlds nearest within the Near Umbra. It is a Domain to the shapeshifter, trespassers not allowed. It appears however the creator wants it to look. Could be like a Victoria mansion, Incan pyramid, Hindu temple, a garden, spring, the tundra, a savannah, lush beautiful woodlands, or even a cozy cave.


Benefits

This is more than just a hideout or short cut into the Umbra. There are several benefits to acquiring a Den Realm.

Stepping Sideways

The owner can step sideways into the Umbra at a base difficulty of three, but the owner of the Glade can opt to raise the difficulty for others. No shiny object is required as a focus.

Skipping

The character can "blink" from place to place within the Glade. This requires a standard Gnosis roll, and the character can "blink" as many times per scene as she has Gnosis points. The distance for a skip is the same as the character's ordinary movement capacity, though the character may certainly move out of range of sight if this is within that movement capacity.

To perform a blink the character leaps from her current position, to emerge out of any solid object, such as a tree or a stone, and emerges from it the following turn. She must have a solid object to blink into, but the object need not be large enough to logically contain her form. Failed rolls leave the character at her original jump point, botches freeze her in mid-blink.

Sensing

Being at one with her lands, the owner of the Den realm knows what transpires within them. If some act of evil or violence (including bulldozing or forestry) is performed on either side of the Gauntlet, a lingering pain in the soul follows the Fera until she finds out what it is, and preferably deals with it. The player rolls Perception + Den realm vs 8 for the character to instinctively get an idea of the transgression, or to locate the anomaly.

Tracking

The Fera always instinctively knows the way to her Den Realm.

Peeking

The character may Peek into the Glade from either side of the Gauntlet, like the ability of the Garou. The Gauntlet counts as three for this action, regardless of what it truly is.

Transport

The Fera may transport one additional being with her to her Glade. There is no limit as to how many she may bring with her, but she can only do so ith one person at a time.


Options

When creating a Den Realm, there are several other option available to purchase by spending Background Points on it. When there are more characters involved, the more points are available to be spent. Size is automatic. You get one of the following options for free at level one, and can use your additional points to purchase the other options listed below at the cost of one Background Point each per level.

  • Replenish Gnosis: Each level increases the amount of Gnosis replenished per day within the Den Realm.
  • Provides nourishment: Each level increases the amount of nourishment, illusory or actual, the Den Realm provides.
  • Inner Peace: A certain appropriate ability is picked (i.e.: Enigmas, Meditation, etc) at creation of the Den Realm, attuning it to this particular ability making use within it easier (see table below: difficulty reduction based on level)
  • Reduce or Increase Gauntlet: The Gauntlet of the Den Realm may be reduced or increased by up to three points. This does not apply for the owner (base Gauntlet is always 3 for owner). N background points applied will increase/decrease Gauntlet starting at the listed Base Gauntlet below for the level of Den Realm it is applied to.

How do I go about this?

You need to be sure you meet all the requirements listed below. If your PC does, then open a +request to create your Den Realm. Bastet will need to roll to perform the rite, and it is encouraged to have a scene. Then submit a desc for the room to be built to represent the Den Realm, and submit your choices for the options listed above. Be sure to list where you want this Den Realm to be located (dbref# of the room it is attached to).

Gurahl

While similar to Den Realms, Gurahl can create an Umbral Glade. Other than using the background name Umbral Glade the rest is the same as above. We use the references in the Players Guide to the Changing Breeds over what is found only in the Breedbooks, as it is a Revised Edition.
