Denise spent most of her life doing two things - helping her family make money, and caring for her elderly Great-Grandmother. Her family traveled around the country putting on shows with her other gypsy extended family. She made jewelry for them to sell as Talismans to those that they could sucker. Her Great-Grandmother, Beverly, taught her everything she knows about palm reading, and told her many stories of the past and fantastical things she has seen in her lifetime.

Denise was trained to con people from their money by her family. She had a natural talent to read people and always be aware of what was going on. That came in handy at an early age when she spotted some people trying to steal from her Aunt while she was giving someone a reading. She was able to learn much about the art of performing and picking out things to say to make a reading believable. By the time Denise was 14, she had started filling in for her Great-Grandmother as she was unable to perform very often. In between performing, her Great-Grandmother, Beverly, would give her more tips and share more stories which helped her make the readings even more believable. When Denise started the first reading after her 16th birthday, everything seemed to change. She did not have to make things up or work as hard to read people. Visions would just come to her and they would come true. This was good for business, but freaky for Denise. It became worse when those visions of her familia would come - especially when 2 of her cousins died. The visions became more scary of monsters, vampires, and terrible events that had to be magical. When Denise turned 20, her powers amped up again. Now she only had to touch someone and visions would come to her. Hands down the worst part was the clearest vision she ever had. This time it was of herself in the near future. She looked older, like she had been through a terrible life-changing event. Her older self told her she must get to Prospect if she hoped to save herself from certain death.

In Denise's culture, she is expected to get married at age 16, 20 at the latest. After that time, if her family has not been able to arrange her, then the community will think there is something wrong with her, or her family. When her visions began at 16, and she could not stop telling and warning people about them, her family could not find any family willing to arrange her. While Denise was relieved to not be arranged to some boy she barely knew and would be forced to leave her family and join theirs, she knew that nothing would be the same.
