As he neared adulthood, Yue’s father insisted he pursue higher education abroad, arranging for him to study psychology and sociology in London. Yue excelled at University College London, combining his therapeutic training with his studies to develop a unique approach to healing through both physical and emotional support. Fluent in English, with a hint of a British accent, he settled into a shared office as a therapist and often used TianTian as a practice subject for new massage techniques.

However, Yue’s life took an unexpected turn when he was briefly kidnapped by agents seeking to pressure his father, warning him of the consequences if his father didn’t back down from a political rivalry. Concerned for his son’s safety, Yue’s father insisted that Yue relocate to California to escape potential harm. Although Yue was initially resistant, TianTian, who had become a steadfast friend and protector, urged him to accept the move.

Yue has startling winter grey eyes due to being blind from birth. He usually wears sunglasses when he's out but when he's in private amongst people he trusts, he leaves them off. His doctors told him from a young age to move his eyes as if he were sighted to help keep his eye muscles strong, so he looks in the direction of any sound he hears, including speech, which can seem unnerving for a man who purports to be totally blind. He is, in fact, totally blind, however. Yue prefers to dress on the elegant side, wearing clothing that emphasizes his quiet nature, from a flowy Chinese jacket over a white silk shirt and black harem pants for casual days to a fine suit for formal occasions. When doing massage work, he always wears a utilitarian short sleeve "tang suit".

Even then, he worries about his "Daren" (Pronounced "Dah-Ren"), a term of endearment he gave to Yue from their love of Chinese period dramas, meaning "Lord". He may call him "Wang Daren", meaning "Lord Wang", or when speaking directly to him, just "Daren". Yue has come to love the term despite his initial resistance and accepts it freely now. Any man, woman, or any other designation seeking to pursue Yue romantically has to go through TianTian, much to Yue's chagrin. He just wants to be sure they have good intentions towards his Daren, much like a father over a teenage girl. Yue feels it's kind of cute.

Biography
GoldLine.png

Wang Yue was born blind in Lanzhou (pronounced "Lan-Joe"), Gansu Province, China, under difficult circumstances: his mother died during his birth, leaving him with only his father, a prominent local political official and a member of the Chinese Communist Party. Though his father loved him, his demanding career as head of the Ministry of Taxation for Lanzhou left him little time to be a hands-on parent. Instead, Yue was raised by his paternal grandparents, who adored him and devoted themselves to his upbringing. Yue’s maternal grandparents, however, rejected him completely, considering him a burden. Though their disapproval stung in his early years, Yue eventually grew strong enough to let go of their judgment.

Raised in relative wealth and with a strong sense of independence, Yue attended Tianshui Special Education School, staying in a dormitory during the week and visiting home on weekends. After age twelve, though, he stopped seeing his grandparents altogether and he refuses to even speak of them. Around this time, his father brought a new companion into Yue’s life: Li TianXiao, nicknamed TianTian, a boy Yue’s age.

Over time, TianTian tested Yue, showing him a cold, indifferent side that Yue felt was a shield to protect his “brother” from the pain of abandonment. A serious incident happened that changed TianTian and Yue’s relationship forever and now they are truly inseparable. TianTian looks up to Yue, despite Yue’s blindness.

TianTian: Why do you bother like you do? The other kids in your class who come from high ranking families push others around and make their disabilities someone else’s problem. I can’t even get you to slow down and let me get the door for you sometimes!

Yue: One side of my family believes I am a shame, a burden. The other side coddled me and would rarely let me do things for myself. I want to be my own man, TianTian. I want to know that my life thrived or failed by my own hand. I want people to look at me and see joy, see strength, see loyalty and devotion. I don’t want to lean on others. I want others to lean on me. If a blind guy like me can make it on his own, I can inspire others to try their hardest. I want to be remembered as someone who mattered, who cared, not as that blind rich kid from Lanzhou.

TianTian: You talk too much, you know that? *blushes furiously, touched deeply by Yue’s words*

Yue: *laughs* Don’t ask questions you don’t want answers to. *reaches out to ruffle TianTian’s hair, who lets him do it*

Throughout his school years, Yue developed a passion for creative writing, while TianTian pursued calligraphy and brush painting. The two often collaborated, producing beautiful Chinese scrolls with poetry that became highly sought after. Determined not to let his disability define him, Yue also took an interest in physical fitness and, after injuring himself, became captivated by Tuina massage therapy. He persuaded a renowned therapist, Sifu Zhang, to take him on as an apprentice after completing a massage therapy course. Yue’s humility and willingness to learn deeply impressed his mentor.

Together, they settled in Prospect, California, where Yue prepared to start his life anew, carrying forward the knowledge and skills he had gained, and TianTian by his side, ready to support him in this next phase of his journey.

Roleplay Hooks

Mainland Chinese: As a mainland Chinese who had spent most of his life there, he is a little different from most Chinese born and raised here. He grew up as the majority race in his homeland so issues regarding his race don't upset him. He can't be easily offended even with great effort on the part of the offender and he doesn't see himself as a "Person of Colour" as he feels that term erases who he is as a Chinese and dilutes him into some monolithic "Asian". As such, he may seem a bit out-of-touch to Chinese born and raised here. If someone refers to him as a Person of Colour or a "PoC", he will stop them and correct them by asking just what colour is he supposed to be?
Chinese Politics: Yue's father is the head of the Ministry of Taxation for Lanzhou back in China and is a corrupt man, though he tries desperately to hide it from his son. Yue is aware his father has shady contacts and dealings and tries to keep away from it all, knowing the man won't change just because his son asked him to. As such, Yue tries to live as independently as he can so no one can say he profits off of the back of his father's corruption. Yue has been the target of criminal actions due to being the man's son and is wary of Chinese who seem to already know too much about him or seem too eager to talk to him, for that reason. Chinese Drama Lover: Yue, as well as his companion TianTian, is a big lover of Chinese dramas. Whether period "Xianxia" dramas, wire-fu "Wuxia" dramas, or modern romance, comedy, or dramatic dramas, he loves watching Chinese media.
Chinese Rock and Pop Music: He will occasionally listen to Western music but he most prefers music from China. One of his favourite musicians is Xu Wei (许巍) for his deeply melodic tones and musicality. He enjoys Chinese rocker Wang Feng (汪峰) as well but is conflicted due to the singer's many romantic infidelities.
Tui-Na Massage Therapy: He is master of Chinese massage therapy, Tui-Na (simplified to "Tuina") and Gua Sha. Due to his blindness, he doesn't offer cupping or acupuncture therapy, however. He can be booked for private sessions, though TianTian always accompanies him for Yue's safety, but also has a massage studio in his home with a separate entrance for clients to come to him.
Psychotherapy: Yue got his masters in psychotherapy and mixes it in with his massage therapy, finding that by opening the body, it makes it easier to open the mind as well. All psychotherapy sessions may include Tuina massage at an extra cost but he is perfectly happy to just sit and talk with clients if they prefer.
Poetry and Storytelling: He has a gift for poetry and storytelling, but as he is blind, his companion, TianTian, acts as his hands and writes all his works for him. He draws beautiful Chinese traditional brush work and calligraphy and together, they make sought-after poetic scrolls that sell for $100 or more a scroll.
"Kitsune": He's a proud Chinese and refuses to use the term "Kitsune" for himself and instead uses the Chinese term "Hulí Jing / (狐狸精)". He doesn't get irritated if confused as a Japanese Kitsune or Korean Gumiho but he will definitely correct people on this.
LGBTQIA+: Yue does not think of himself with sexualized terms but to most people, he would be considered bisexual/pansexual. He falls in love with peoples' souls, not their bodies, so their gender isn't a necessary factor in who he dates or has casual relations with. He has no transphobia or other kinds of phobias because again, he cares about the hearts of people over anything else.
Li TianXiao (TianTian): TianTian has been Yue's constant companion since the age of 13 and looks up to him like an older brother despite them being the same age. He's fiercely loyal to Yue, feeling a deep, brotherly connection to him. Where Yue goes, TianTian goes unless Yue asks him to stay behind.
