It started small, as most things do. A simple home computer, nothing powerful, enough to play the latest games and allow connection to the internet. Kyle's family expected him to play the games, waste his time shooting pixels that were other people across the world. Instead, the internet opened up a whole world of possibilities and Kyle was curious.
Within a couple of years, Kyle had convinced his parents to purchase upgrades; faster internet speed, faster processor, more memory. His curiosity with the internet lead to finding out what was hiding behind the distant IP addresses. What were his friends test results? What were the tests about? What was the success rate at the other schools? What was the success rate across the state?
Each step took him deeper. School servers switched to libraries, small businesses, larger businesses, the police, the Government, whatever the Government were hiding in their vast databases. Curiosity took him around the world from his bedroom, had him investigating sites he had no business being in.
Though his curiosity isn't satisfied, Kyle is doing something more constructive with his skills, taking 'bounties' on business servers, trying to hack through them to reveal the flaws to their owners. It's one way of making money, a way of funding his 'other' activities.
